Knowledgable Gun owners... Which gun to get? Beretta or Hi-Power?

Ok I lied a little... Not a Browning HP, but an FEG, a decent HP clone.

Found a couple deals on both... Could get either one for about $400. The FEG seems in decent shape and comes with one mag. The Beretta 92fs shows a good deal of holster wear, but otherwise sound, comes with 4 mags.

Now, I would be getting one or the other for enthusiast reasons, not how it feels or to carry or anything. I hear the High Power style guns are (in the words of another Y!A user) to the 9mm what the 1911 is to the .45, so I'd love to have one in the safe and occasionally shoot around. On the same token, the 92fs is really a beautiful pistol albeit big for a 9mm. Just seems like another classic to own.

Thoughts?

Update:

Private sales from reputable gun owners, NOT from retailer.

Update 2:

Thanks but no thanks for the Glock refurbs... I have several in my safe already. JUST talking about the FEG and 92fs. BTW, the guy offered $350 for the FEG, not 400. My mistake.

The 92fs is the better deal, but the Hi power is a better gun. I think the beretta 92fs is extremely overrated.

The Hi Power is the most widely used handgun of all time (nearly every country has used it but the US). The Hi Power has fought against itself on numerous occasions (the Canadians used them in WWII and so did the Germans, the Iraqis used them and so did the British, the Argentinians used them as did the British).

Ive shot both, and Id rather shoot a Hi Power.

I didn't realize those FEGs had gotten so pricey. As they're not exactly a "clone" (most parts don't interchange and HP mags won't fit) $400.00 seems a little high for the FEG. They are a decent shooter, though.

Of the choices you gave, I'd probably go with the 92.

You didn't ask, but you should be able to get a good factory refurb Glock or police trade-in for that price. Unless you just like watching a hammer come back when you shoot. To each their own . . . .

Ignorance is the only reason anyone would not consider all makes and models when buying ANYTHING! I agree with most of what you have said. To buy a gun or a car just because it's made in America or by an American company the most ignorant and uninformed thing anyone could do. That attitude is exactly why the American Automobile Companies are in such trouble. They know and have known that people like some of the posters to this question will buy American no matter how big a piece of crap it is. Because they know this the American car makers have continually turned out hunks of junk (Chevy Cavalier anybody?) that don't last and are problematic until we junk them. The American get up and go spirit is not dead, the foreign auto makers have it. It is not patriotic to buy American, people who do are the traitors because without knowing or realizing it you are making the American company weaker by buying inferior cars and not holding them to a higher standard. Of course this is not true of all American makers I guess there is still a few cars worth a damn but the list is short. I know I've strayed from the subject this is supposed to be about guns but the Automotive Industry is very similar in many ways. I don't believe that gun owners are as strict about buying American as car owners. The evidence is so easy to see that some foreign gun makers make great guns and some make junk. To dismiss all foreign guns from your choices is just plain ignorant and stupid. I am a proud American and I love my country but I do not like what the stupid and ignorant have turned it into.

The FEG highpower is a single action semi auto pistol (the hammer has to be ****** to fire when you pull the trigger) The Beretta is a conventional double action semi auto pistol. The first shot is fired by just pulling the trigger and the rest of the shots are then single action. This might make a difference depending on what you intended use is for the pistol. When you go to sell it you would be better off with the Beretta. Beretta is considered a top quality pistol with a good resale value whereas the FEG is much less desirable price wise.

The FEG that looks just like a 1960's First Model Browning is made under Mauser supervision and is exact in every detail. I would buy one for $350 dollars. The FEG that has a ventilated rib on the top was made without Mauser supervision and is junk, don't buy it.

Get the 92fs. The other gun, like you said, it NOT a HP. If you could get an actual HP for that price I'd say jump all over it. But...you can NOT even compare a HP "clone" to an actual HP. It's like comparing a Lamborquini (I'm not sure how you spell it) to a Kia, and saying they are nearly the same.

As a former Beretta owner, I absolutely loved the gun, except one thing. The grip was awful big. I found myself altering my grip so as to reach the trigger.

I too also really like the looks of the 92.

Never fired an HP, so I will withhold comment on that aspect.

To me the difference is insignificant.

More importantly, with auto loading handguns, make sure that the person you buy it from has a good reputation for caring about his customers. With those handguns, you might need to take the pistol to a gunsmith to cure smll problems (like stove piping of difficult disassembly for cleaning).

If you have a mechanical problem - even a small one - the gun will be no fun.

Do not go for cheap with a pistol. Look for service after the sale. This means you gotta expect to let the seller make a little money.

I do not know the FEG. I have seen them at gun shows, but never handled one.

The 92 is a shoe in for me.

I´ve recently been shooting the Browning Hi-power and absolutely loved it.
