Will an over the counter sleep aid euthanize a cat?
Our beloved friend is losing his fight with an injury. Under a vet's advice and what we could afford, I am now confident that all that could be done, has been done.
It is simply our friend's time.
I don't want him to go out frightened by transporting him to the clinic. He hates that. I want him to slip away quietly at home at peace with the family who loves him and who he loves. He's frightened of strangers so bringing a vet to the house would be just as terrifying for him as going to the clinic.
So...
1. Is it legal to put your own pet down?
2. What will do that?
3. If it will not do it outright alone, will it keep him under to the point where he will not be awakened by some other means of dispatch to avoid some last second unpleasantries?
Lastly. But by no means, the least...
4. Is there some organization that could help us for free to save his life?
This has already run into several hundreds and there simply are no more funds to keep trying.

Talk to your vet about giving you a tranquilizer to give at home, that way when you take him to the clinic to be euthanized, he will not be stressed out. Trying to do this yourself could create more suffering for the kitty.

See if the vet can come to your house. Lots of them will and it won't cost alot ($30-100). The thing about "homemade" euthanasia is that it can go wrong and produce devastating results. Your kitty may get really sick and suffer even more. The vet has the right medication in the correct dose and the experience to help him ease out comfortably. I understand you've paid alot to treat him, but do you really want to skimp on his last moments on earth? He's been your friend for years, he deserves this last act of kindness.
To answer your question, it depends on where you live if it's legal or not. If all else fails your local Humane Society or Cats Protection shelter can help you.

You've already brought him to the vet for treatment and now you don't want to bring him in to be euthanized? Whether the vet does it in their office or at your home you will be with your cat to comfort him. I feel your pain because I had my cat put down three weeks ago. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do and I'm still sick over it. The actual process was quick and I know he didn't suffer but I just miss the little guy.

You need to get your cat euthanized by a vet...you may end up toturing your cat trying to kill it yourself...that is just sick and cruel. If you really care about your cat, you would not experiment on it and possibly cause it lots of pain in the process of dying. Euthanizing your own cat is not humane, you have no idea how the cat may be affected by the medication. It may not even kill him but just make him brain damaged, or maybe cause him to die a painful death by destroying internal organs or cause the cat to bleed internally. Please, take him to the vet, or have the vet make a house visit to you.

I would think enough sleep aids would do it. There's a few pills that will kill cats. I forgot what they where, I only know so because I herd it on the radio. It was a special about what not to give cats. Google it.

I'm sorry about your kitty :(
I'd suggest maybe going to a local humane society and talking to someone there. Tell them your story and maybe someone will volunteer to come by and do that job for you.

Depends on your country to what organistions can help.
UK putting cat to sleep costs around £35 ($50)
It is not legal to do it yourself.
It is a difficult question, sorry.
