Trickle charge a good battery or not ?
This is a followup post. The first post is below.
Should I trickle charge my 5 year old battery despite it not showing any signs of weakness ?
My only real concern, and it would probably never happen, but is there a chance a battery could go dead out of the blue and NOT accept a jump ?
----------
"Would you replace a 5 year old battery ?
It has never not cranked on me. And I carry a charged "jump box" just in case.
But the battery is 5 years old. An "Everstart" with a 3 year free replacement warranty.
Alternator went out a few years ago. I charged it then. And a brake light switch went out causing the tail light to stay on so I charged it then too.
Otherwise, never have."
No need to "save" for a new battery, I can afford one. Just would rather keep this one another year or two. They key is not being "stuck" and unable to even jump start it with my emergency jump box.
I also have roadside assistance which runs me about $11.60 a year as another "just in case" but its the "problem" of being stuck in either the hot or cold or even in good weather for that matter.

A trickle charge wont hurt the battery at all. As far as the battery being 5 years old, then maybe yes you may need to replace it soon, and most batteries give no warning when they are about to go, especially on a cold winter morning when you really need the car to start. have a load test performed on the battery to see how much life is still in the battery, if it is borderline, then i would recommend replacing it just out of hindsight.
good luck.......

Trickle charging a good battery runs the possibility of overcharging it and this will damage it. You just got one of the "good" batteries. Run it til it dies.
