How does the recoil of a .40S&W?

compare to the kick off a 9mm? Assume compact frame, not full size, like a Glock 23 or the SW M&P compact.

Thanks.

Ha ha, gotta add a PS -- ya know what category this defaulted to?

"Social Science > Gender Studies." !! Figure that one out.

The recoil depends on the weapon, so it's difficult to say. I own a Glock 23, and I don't think the recoil is really bad at all. It's a little more than my dad's Berretta M9 or my friend's Browning HiPower, but it's not by a lot. It's perfectly manageable.

To get a straight caliber to caliber comparison, you'd need to fire them from the same weapon. So maybe if you were to shoot the same model weapon chambered in those two calibers. But my experience has been that the .40 S&W kicks just a little more than the 9mm.

I can shoot my 9mm sub compac all day, but with either of my full size 40's- I get tired quick.

The 40 was intentionally designed to fall in between the 9mm and 45 acp. Power wise is does just that. But recoil wise, its over the top. A 45 acp is much more pleasant to shoot.

It definitely has a little more kick to it, but it is not so bad that it is not manageable.

I might put it in the category of a mild .357 if you could imaging such a thing, compared to a .38.

I do not find it a problem to shoot at all, I would much rather shoot this round than anything else.

The best way I can describe it is that it has about the force of the recoil of a .45, but is as snappy as a 9mm. From a mechanical and ballistic standpoint the .40 S&W is a fine round, but from a shootability perspective it is the worst of the three cartridges.

The recoil is much more snappy in .40S&W than 9mm but it is still very manageable.

its more snappy than a 9mm......but just like any recoil u can get used to it with some practice..

** as for the category default...sounds like newell is to blame...

  • as said by the others it is a little bit more recoil but it wont make not want to shoot it again after one shot

Sharper, more difficult to control. It's not for everybody and it takes more practice to get used to.

I can do decent work with either; however, give me a choice and I'll choose a 9 every time.
