getting a PhD...maybe...?

Hello:

I have a question...or am seeking opinions rather.

I have attended a state university for my AA, fell for the Phoenix pitch and ended up with a BS in management... I then managed to make it into a good private school to get my MBA (12 credits left to completion this fall). Now, my wife is pursuing a PhD at the local state university and I am beginning to take an interest in doing the same...

My biggest hesitation is that I have no experience teaching and want to get into teaching post-secondary education with the PhD in management. I have been in management since age 19, and am in a mid-management level now in a very large health care system at the age of 27.

I would like to know your thoughts on getting a PhD, and if having no experience in education will hinder me greatly-OR if my experience actually in "management" will equally benefit me.

    Management experience is a plus in the classroom actually. Teaching is all about management of people, resources, and materials. Another advantage that I can see for you with your management experience and PhD is the fact that you would make an excellent candidate for an administrative position working in the superintendent's office. Your management experience and background would make you a strong employee and viable candidate for helping with the operations of a school district.

    Go for it. You don't need experience teaching to get the Ph.D. and start teaching. You may be assigned to teach while a doctoral student. Teaching is a very satisfying profession. But not all Ph.D.s teach. Some do only research, others get into management. You won't regret getting the degree.

    My daughter is getting her PhD and does no teaching. She does research only for her tuition and stipend.

    If you are fearful of teaching, join a Toastmasters club. In 3 months you have an 80% chance of becoming a great public speaker.

    My daughter and I have both taught and really, it is not that hard.
