This year my itemized deductions is a lot more then the standard deduction, but it didn't change my refund why?

I did my taxes this year and my itemized deductions are $4,000 more then the standard deduction the government allows for married filing joint, but itemizing did not change my refund - it stays the same whether I itemize or not - does anyone know why?

Update:

I used turbo tax and have used turbo tax for 10 years - I also tried a different tax company on line and it did the same thing. I did have very little income this year due to a job loss - only made aobut 8,000.00 this year. I wondered if that could be the reason. I didn't think it mattered how much you your income vs. how much your deductions are. I have a lot of medical expenses.

Update 2:

All of my deductions are ones that can be used. Tithing, charitable, mortgage interest, student loan interest etc.

That's mathematically impossible. I'm assuming you had a program do your taxes for you. I would do them by hand, and you can see why for yourself.

That could happen if your exemptions wiped out your taxable income when either the standard deduction or itemized deductions are used. It's also possible that the various refundable and non refundable credits would result in the same refund whether you itemized or took the standard deduction.

You're making some sort of mistake somewhere.

Print out copies of each form, the one where you itemize and the one where you take the standard deduction. Compare them line by line and see where the differences are. Hopefully this will help you discover your mistake.
