How would I become a book cover model?

Often, the images for book covers are taken from stock photography sites such as http://www.gettyimages.com/ or http://www.istockphoto.com./ On stock photo sites, photographers upload their photography of models, landscapes, foods, etc and designers go to them when a photo is needed. When they find the one they like, the photographer is paid a certain amount based on the usage of the photo, and usually there is a contractual agreement with the model. This contract varies based on the usage.

If a book's cover designer decides there really should be a photo shoot to get just the right photo, they will often hire a photographer and generic modeling agency to get what they need.

There's no way to guarantee that you can be on a book cover. The best thing you could do would be to have an "in" with a particular publishing company (a friend or family member or friend-of-a-friend working there) and, as you pursue a normal modeling career, you may get a call for a shoot.

Even then, the chances are slim :(

Authors have very little control over their book covers, unless they are self-publishing. Book covers are designed through the publishing company. Some publishers give authors some artistic freedom in the creative process of designing a book cover, but it's not the norm.

I'm sorry. x) Random. But I've always wanted to model...And I'm the biggest book nerd ever. If I were to go into modeling, could I specify that I'd like to do book cover shoots? Or are there not specific models for that? Also, if there is a way to do this, how would I go about that?...

Also, in these days of kindle self-publishing, there are a number of cover artists out there working for would-be writers. Some might have use for a model. Put together a portfolio of shots, google "list of indie cover artists" and start sending them short emails, Since most of those covers get done for 100 dollars, I doubt they'd give you more than five or ten of them, though.

What you need to do to get the best results is to directly contact authors themselves or after youve got an agent get them to do that for you. If you specify that you would only like to do book covers they will work on finding you book covers
