Smith and Wesson Sigma Accuracy?
Hi, I'm CCW permit holder and I'm thinking about getting a Sigma (haven't decided between 9mm of 40 yet). I've heard some great reviews coming from the newest generation and the prices is too good to ignore. The only thing im concerned about it accuracy. From what i understand accuracy is where the sigma falls short. I know that in self defense situations you are usually with in a few feet from your target. Honestly I'm not hoping to hit quarters at 25 yards, but i want to know that i won't have to worry about some random shot hitting an innocent bystander. can anyone give me an idea of how accurate they are?

The "Battle Tested" thing made me laugh out loud.
If you're reading great reviews about the Sigma, look very closely at who wrote them.
S&W had to improve the current sigma over the previous incarnations. I DO own one, so I'm not just bashing. I have never really found the SW9 to be lacking in accuracy or reliability, though some have. I will say that the legally-required trigger is possibly THE WORST I have ever encountered.
If you plan on carrying and/or using it for defense you are stuck with the crappy trigger. You can get used to it, I suppose. If you are ONLY ever going to use it for targets and plinking, the trigger CAN be improved. I will not be telling you how to do it, but will say that the striker spring is NOT the place to do it. Playing around with the striker spring is asking for ignition problems.
I do like the Sigma's basic sights better than Glock's basic sights.

S&W has been fairly aggressive in their pricing within the past couple of months with many of their semi-auto models. The 9mm Sigma has been battle tested in Afghanistan and generally has a good reputation. The articulated trigger on older Sigmas gets criticism from time to time (okay, a lot) for its relatively heavy pull, but by and large the gun's a reliable shooter than is more than accurate in experienced hands. Depending on ammo you can get 2" to 3" groups @ 10 yards, though bear in mind that's against a paper bad guy. In a real world scenario, it's a WHOLE lot different.
Since I haven't seen let alone shot the latest generation version I can't say how much better it is. Ultimately it's going to come down to how much training and practice you'll do with the gun just because it's going to be your skills that matter the most.
All that said, I'd still very much rather have my Glock 19 or my M&P9 over a Sigma. To a large degree it's due to the amount of shooting time I've already spent with those, but also to me the difference in price is worth it for the improved finish and build quality,

Internet quote of the day, 'The 9mm Sigma has been battle tested in Afghanistan and generally has a good reputation.'
Yes, Sir! I know that whenever I go to pick out a new shooter, I always ask myself, 'What are the illiterate, dirt poor, bassackwards, Afghani village militia units using for a sidearm right now?' (Then, I buy something else.)
3" targets at 20 yards with a Sigma - Wow! I wouldn't want to try that. A word for everyone who thinks all pistol gunfights take place at very close range. Read the current statistics. Things are changing.

I'm a proud Sigma 40 14+1 owner and carrier. i've put about 1000 rounds thru it since december 09 and it fires like a beauty. i did some accuracy tests over the weekend and i was picking off 3 inch targets at about 20 yards with ease. I've change the spring on the firing pin so my pull is a couple pounds less then factory. i'll go to war with my Smithy any day. One thing you should always remember is that you won't be shooting it from 100yds from target or 50 so practice in a realistic distance with the type of weapon you have. If you ever have to use it, your target more than likely won't be too far from you. It's very accurate for me but i been shooting for a while and aiming comes natural to me. Since its self-defense your using it for then its a darn good buy. If anyone tells you any different they probly never shot one or just talking from what everyone else's opinions are......I'm Surgical wit mine and put it up against anyone.

just remember barrel length when you're picking a CCW gun. longer barrel more accuracy shorter barrel less accuracy as im sure you're aware of. like someone else said, modern guns by reputable companies are gonna be "accurate enough" for that sort of thing. with good ammo they should hit within a 3" group at 20 yards

The sigma is a peice of crap, I used to have one. I sold it about 3 years ago out of spite. I hated it. The trigger sucks and when it comes to a carry gun you don't want to go the cheap route.

Any modern handgun is accurate enough not to hit innocent bystanders. If they do get hit, it's not the gun; it's the shooter's fault.
S&W is a reputable company. The accuracy of the gun will exceed the accuracy of you.
