Hmmm..if atheists have low morals?

Recently, one fundie wrote regarding atheists "No it means 2 1/2 % of the world have blind minds when it comes to spiritual matters. It also seems to go along with low morals." (I won't mention who so that she doesn't have to make a Journey of shame.)

So, if atheists have low morals, then there should be a statistically larger population of atheists in prisons, right?

No? Oh, then they should be about what one would expect staistically since they have about the same morality as the religious, right?

Oh, wait...their population is only a fraction (about 40% by one study, 10% by another) of what one would expect from their population overall. Gee, what does that say about the morality of atheists?

Update:

@ Gant - I was talking relative percentages here..if atheists make up 2.5% of the overall population, one would expect thay'd likewise make up 2.5% of the prison population...but instead the studies indicated 0.25 - 1% of the prison population.

Update 2:

@ Journey - ah, gotcha...we're immoral, but smart.

Morals are something that you get from society in general and not from a book or higher power.

I would argue about this, but I will play Devil's advocate today.

The majority of christians in prison are probably not really christian but just going along with what everyone else is believing.

It probably has a lot to do with ingroup think. If you take a look at prisons in general there are niches that form naturally, or unnaturally if you are looking at it with logic.

That being said, I would argue that a large population of the inmates were already part of the christianity religion prior to entering the prison.

It seems as though with such a small percentage of the population being atheists it would make sense that there would be less in prison.

EDIT: I see. I guess I read you wrong.

In that case, I still would like to know as to the percentage of practicing christians in prison vs. those who are looking for a title while in prison.

I can see the stats being skewed one way or another because of this.

None the less, yes, there are far less atheists in prison than there are religious.

You should ask yourself, "Why do some fundis say Atheists have low morals?" And the answer I think you will find is, "because they believe that without belief in God, there can be no morality by which to live your life." And if this is the case, then shouldn't the best representative statistic be that of atheists and agnostics (non-religious) which actually is closer to 20%?

It has been my personal experience that atheists tend to be more moral that most people (save perhaps the "God is love, so lets all have a group hug and sing happy songs" people <-- which I think is totally awesome btw) possibly because we believe that this life is the only shot we have at happiness so we struggle to keep it kind and to surround ourselves with kind people.

  • Greetings Professor, thanks for including me to help respond to your query about atheists and morals; I've gathered the following from my heart and the bible, enjoy.

Perhaps this is a question best answered truthfully by ones own set of compromised / uncompromising values; proudly one may argue their point, assimilating intellect with immorality. So, if there is wisdom in being immoral, then by your own criteria, should we assume there is stupidity in being moral? Let it never be.

    1 Corinthians 9:19

Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have voluntarily become a servant to any and all in order to reach a wide range of people: religious, nonreligious, meticulous moralists, loose-living immoralists, the defeated, the demoralized—whoever. I didn't take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ—but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I've become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life. I did all this because of the Message. I didn't just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it!

    1Cor.1.20

Where is the wise man (the philosopher)? Where is the scribe (the scholar)? Where is the investigator (the logician, the debater) of this present time and age? Has not God shown up the nonsense and the folly of this world's wisdom?

    Matt.16.26

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

  • Believers are deluded and like to blame atheist for all the bad things but if there are so many more believers then they will be running a bigger bit of the world so why is that bad management of the World down to the small population of atheists?

They like to blame as they can't take responsibility as they think their gods will wash away all the bad things they do whereas atheists accept responsibility for their own actions.

Its sad that so many people are living in a false state of mind.

Most atheists do not have low morals. Just because one chooses to not believe does not mean that they are in any way unkind or immoral. I believe that people that follow a god or other icon of faith is more likely to be immoral to others. Take the crusades for example, Christians killed hundreds of thousands of Muslims just because they believed differently. Dose that sound moral? No.

It shows that God has mercy to forgive the sinner. Besides, if a Christian ended up in prison, then they were imprisoned for being christian. Had they committed a crime worthy of prison time than they had a very elementary understanding of Christianity and more than likely were "Social Christians" or "Hypocrites"

The Mad Professor, I have a question for you!!

Do you believe you continue to exist after physical death.

Just in case you're an analyzer, let me define "you" as a conscious being capable of thought, and "Death" as the point when your physical body begins to deteriorate.

The Christian as Saudi Arabia is Muslim (almost) USA is the worlds largest producer and consumer of pornography and illegal drugs.

Morality has nothing to do with religion.

Edit: If us Europeans have sold our continent to Islam, where is my cheque?

Anyone who agrees 100% with the bible has lower morals than most atheists.
