Update:

i dont think that ANYONE intelligent would be looking for a hot weapon. and there are at least a few under 300. p3at's and p11's are only 230-270. i know taurus has some. im just looking for people who have experience with any particular one.

I personally LOVE my p11, and pf9. The p11 has logged about 75,000 miles on road trips around the country with me, and hasn't let me down. Shoot 200 rounds through it when you first get it, as this is the break in time with these guns. After those first 200 rounds, you will be good to go.

The Bersa Firearms are another great selection, though they'll be at the very top end of your price range, and many instances a bit over. They come in 9, 40, and 45. I have a Bersa Thunderer-UC 9 and a UC45 which I love dearly. I personally think these are the best deals on the market today, as well as the most under-praised firearms currently going. It's true that they're a bit thick, but a good holster fixes that if you intend on carrying.

I'm personally not a fan of the sub-service calibers such as the 380, and don't own any, and haven't. My brother in law, however swears by his Walther PPK (bought used for $320).

I recommended you look at the Kel-Tec Owners group (linked below in the sources) for more info on any of Kel-Tec's guns.

Another alternative to looking for good values is to look at online gun-stores (such as Buds Gun shop), list guns by price to see the lowest prices first, then Google search which ever guns catch your eye. If they turn out that you like them, start shopping your local gun stores, and if not, then consider ordering online or moving onto another gun. I personally like to handle the gun to see if it fits me first before ordering, as the grip angles on guns vary so wildly that some fit like a dream while others will naturally orient my shots VERY upwards.

The Kel-tec's are pretty decent guns, i have shot the PF9 quite a bit, and several magazines of both the P3at and the P32. For a defensive gun, i would trust it with no problem after a decent 200 round break in period.

You arent going to find a new .40S&W for under $300 in anything thats even remotely OK. You wouldnt really want to shoot that loading in a tiny carry gun either.

I have a Ruger LCP and have shot a P-11. The long trigger takes some getting used to. What I do to improve my accuracy is have the trigger pulled a little over half way, then get a precise point of aim. That way I don't have as much left to pull and can stay on target. I would suggest trying this by dry firing several times so you don't pull to far and fire before you are ready.

I have a KEL TEC P-11 & am very satisfied with it.

The KEL TEC pistols, are designed primarily as a defensive weapon for a Range of 0 to about 10 yards. because they are light & compact, they are NOT long range guns

As far as under $300, you aren't gonna find much that is any good, unless maybe you are willing to buy a HOT weapon
