Is it safe to get rid of this hornet nest in winter?
I have a hornet nest in my backyard. I don't know what kind of hornets, but I live in NH so our winters are very cold. Can I just... get rid of this hornet nest? Are there any inside that are going to wake up and attack me?
For personal reasons I've avoided using a spray to kill them, but I'd really like them gone. I've heard most die before winter and there is only the queen inside...? What do you think? Safe to pull it off?

We used to collect hornets nests here in Missouri during the winter, so you would be fine. We always just stuck some tape across the opening. The hornets are hybernating so won't be buzzing around or anything just tape up the hole wrap in a trash bag and dispose of, probably in a fire would be best. Be warned if you heat up the nest enough they will become active again, lol. I brought a nest in one winter and before I knew it I had 100+ groggy hornets all over my fireplace room.

go to someplace like walliworld or home depot and buy the wasp and hornet killer it sprays up to 20 FT so you don't have to be close.Soak the area where they get in, then once you think you killed most open the grill if they are inside, and soak the whole nest down or use a long stick to open it. Wait a day or two to remove the nest, just to be sure they are dead! Please be very careful they are very agressive little creatures. Hope this helped.. and about the dying it is possible but kill them in any case because of their agression not like they are beneficial honeybees.

I'm not so sure I would trust the answers here and I don't know. Try looking up your hornets on the internet and see what they say there or call a local exterminator. . .and sometimes the fire department will give you help. . .they have to deal with critters all the time. Also your health department may have some ideas. Get a professional opinion just to be sure.

just take a garbage bag and put it over the nest from the bottom and knock the nest into the bag seal the bag and get rid of it , this works any time the temp. is below 45 or so and at night when they are all home is best . in winter just anytime is ok

You should be able to safely knock it down with a broom handle or garden implement. No, they won't attack because if it's very cold, ( below 30 degrees) and if they are still alive; they won't be able to move fast at all anyway. Just wear some garden gloves, knock it down at the base and sweep it away. you will be fine

Take a M80 firecracker and place it next to the hornets nest. Then watch the motherfuckers burn :)

They are dormant right now...but unless you kill them, there is no guarentee they won't come back.
