How safe is the Yucatan Peninsula?
Is there a lot of violence in that area? I'm thinking of doing an exchange program to Mexico but I'm worried about crime.

These answers saying it is safe is simply nonsense. Like Mel says statistically you are safer on the Yucatan. Mexico has never been safe. you always have to watch your back. Unfortunately dead people can`t speak. You see the news and do you think it is safe?
I guess one could say it is safe as long as you barricade your door and don`t dare go out for a walk at 3 am.
Saying yes it is safe implies there is no danger whatsoever and that absolutely false. Don`t listen to these answers that say it is safe.
If there had been no stabbings and throat slashing and Murders that have happened . or No robberies or pickpockets. Not to mention Heads chopped off and hearts cut out and a bar firebombed, all on the Yucatan, then yes I would say it is safe. Was it safe for the Canadians that died in the explosion,? this is pure disrespect for the dead and I am going to go to Playa del Carmen some day and explain to some people what it means to disrespect the dead. The Zetas know where people live.
Mexico has Never been safe and I have had some near misses since I first went to Mexico in the 70s
If you want to feel like a prisoner in your own home and have a gun to protect your self , then it is safer.
There is everything from Dengue fever to shark attacks.
Maybe these people that say it is safe would like to share their opinions with the Victims families. How could any normal person say , sure it is safe come on down to Paradise
Then of course you will get the people that say ...oh yeah I was there for two week and it was very safe......are these people on dope???
If buddy were to tell the truth, you would not believe what precautions he takes to ensure his families safety.
See the link and see what this family laughs about That is Pathetic , not being able to speak or read the news. We Canadians don`t get anywhere near the news that the locals in Cancun get.
I am "never going back to the Killing Ground," after 41 years all my assets are safely out of Mexico.
I was in Acapulco for 9 weeks and there were 500 murders and just the other day people were randomly shot as passersby and drivers alike. What a disaster!!
Who are you going to beleive, someone that would lose money by telling the truth or the facts. I strongly urge you to read these links and decide your self.
Iquote simple FACTS and I get asked what I am on? See the 3 rd link for the "Shark Attact"
I think Playa Dudes comment was "Who are you going to believe? someone from the tundra of Canada or someone that lives here.
Please see the Dengue link that is also a safety risk and Not my opinion http://gomexico.about.com/b/2010/07/23/dengue-in-m...

the further from the border the safer. sure there is less violence in cancun then in the border cities, but the number of killings is still large! even going to places like chitzen itza isn't safe anymore! mexico is a completely different country then it was a decade ago. it's a real shame! people have forget about the natural and hsitortic beauty of the country because you only here about the cartel. but, there's nothing can be done about that! now is not the time to visit mexico! find some other country to do an exchange program!

I can only speak to the East Coast of the Yucatan and that is very safe. I travel throughout that area frequently, alone. I've never worried Even walking at night alone. I would avoid Chihuahua, Monterrey, and most of the border towns with the US. Ironically Americans are afraid of Mexico because of violence and it's right on their border!
As for Jims answer, all I can say is "what are you on?"

There's a bit more petty crime than years back, but it's probably safer than where you're currently living in. I went to Playa del Carmen in 2009 and had a great time. It was incredibly safe even at night. Just watch out for pickpockets, and if you're going to drink at a bar, go with a friend that has some street smarts because waiters at bars will grab your wallet and take whatever cash they feel like if you're sleeping on the dance floor alone.
Most people speak english in that region and in the cities there's cinemas and grocery stores everywhere. The only thing I don't like about Playa is that it doesn't have a theater for plays (odd given it's a city that promotes artists), no ice rink and no Sanborns restaurants. I know some people that don't like Merida and Cancun that much, but I don't have much word on it because I don't know the region much at all outside of Playa. You will probably have a great time here.

Acapulco is considered the country’s 16th largest metropolitan area and one of the most important destinations since its golden days in the 1950s and now you can visit it; take a look with hotelbye . In Acapulco you will enjoy the extreme fun, bungee jumping from 50 m high and a free fall of 2 seconds! In Acapulco you can also feel like you own the world because you will be treated like this in the Romano Palace Hotel. Acapulco is a city where you can enjoy: the mornings, the evening and the nights. In Acapulco you will always find something interesting to do.

well I live closer to the Yucatan Peninsula and it's formed by three states campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan state and the violence you hear in the news is more in some zones of the north of mexico but in this zone as far as it's very safe and of course like any place, you have to take care of your things and to ask the information very well...Merida, Campeche, Cancun are beautiful places

Violence not much. It's a pretty good bet that the Yucatan is statistically safer then where you currently are.
Petty theft can be a problem as there are many poor people.

The Yucatan Peninsula is safe. We have had some trouble but it is all dealing with different gangs fighting for control over the distribution and sales of drugs and is not in anyway effecting tourists who are not looking to buy or sell drugs. The state of Yucatan including Merida and the state of Quintana Roo including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the island of Cozumel are safe.
I have lived here for the past 12 years and am happy to call this home. I am raising my second family here. Besides living in Playa I also have property in the state of Yucatan and have never felt threaten or scared here in quintana Roo or in Yucatan. Nor have I ever worried about my children going off by themselves except for the normal Dad worries about his children.
Where is your exchange program? I will be happy to give you more information.
I have no reason to, as some who have never been here call it sugar coating my answers because I would never put someone intentionally in danger.
Hope this helps. If you have another question just ask as there are several people who have been here and know the area well who are experts and are willing to help you.As always you may contact me directly if I can help you.
OH my, some people sure have a hatred against Mexico. Well maybe they should stay home we do not need those types here. There is no violence against tourist or honest law abiding citizens in the Yucatan Peninsula, you know what I am going out on a limb and will say at any tourist town in the whole of Mexico. I live here I will not and never have given ill advised information. My information is from living here everyday 24 hours a day ever day not at some apartment in a downtown area of a slum listening to Fox News. We are not in fear. We go at night, we go to functions we have life's we have children there is no danger here. The problem one problem in downtown Cancun well if you were there then we say you got what you deserved and do not try to contradicted me.This is not downtown Saigon get on with your life.
It just amazes me and my family, we are all laughing at the ignorance in some answers .I just got back from a walk along the beach with my wife and our 3 children 17,14 and our 8 year old.My 8 year old can not stop laughing about what is said about the danger that is passed along the internet here but is not even the truth but is reported here. We walked for about 3 miles on the beach, it is 12:05AM now, and we passed several people having fun, having private moments, and just beach combing, as we walked along the beach. we had a most enjoyable time relaxed and at ease. We returned walking along 5TH Ave. and we passed 100's of people from all over the world, happy, safe, and not a care to the world. We are here 24/7 not in some apartment tucked away in the tundras of Canada only giving opinions of which they do not have an honest answer to.
Who would you trust? My 8 year old, me, my wife, over 1 million people, who came to Cancun airport last year or someone 3,000 miles away?
@Patriotg...I am sorry, he is out for me for some reason...my 8 year old says he is jealous, I do not know why I have done nothing to him. I thought this was suppose to be an open question and answer program giving the best answer you can but for some reason he has taken it personally and it hurts my family and me. We do pray for him.

Hey Smart ***, I would not go unless you had about 4 other people with you. Even then, I would really watch yourself.. That is not the U.S. You would be on your own.. ( I like your name ) Also, it is not cool... You'll need MUCHO SUN LOTION. Also stuff for sand fleas.
