Very serious itching problem, how do you cure it?

My 96 year old Dad goes to dialysis three times a week and each time he starts scratching like crazy, I was told it was some kind of acid, if so what kind and how do you combat it?

Update:

This only occurs during the actual dialysis treatment, which lasts 3 hours 30 minutes.

If it occurs only during dialysis and not before or after, it may be something in the dialysis fluid. Ask the nephrologist if it can be changed or something given for the itching. It is common for those with renal failure to itch significantly, but it is usually unrelenting, so this may not be the renal failure alone.
