What pain medication can cats take?

Can you safely give a cat a little piece of ibuprofen or something for pain? What would a vet prescribe?

Do NOT give your cat human medicine... ask your vet for what kind of pain medication to give to your cat.

No you cannot. Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen are toxic to cats. Aspirin should only be given under a vet's advice, only in small amounts every 4 DAYS -- and you should never try this on your own.

As for some things vets prescribe:

Meloxicam is one NSAID that is relatively safe for cats.

Tricky - Yes you can give a cat opiates, that's often the most effective class of analgesics for cats. But you shouldn't do it without a vet's advice. Cats are small , getting a dose or dosing schedule wrong you could overdose them.

A commonly prescribed medication for cats is buprenorphine (Buprenex) which is an opioid. It works by either subcutaneous injection or is dripped into the cheek pocket and is absorbed via the oral mucosa.

Fentanyl is another opioid used for cats usually in a transdermal patch

Cats can have morphine although some of them get hyper from it. so it has to be used with care to see how the cat reacts.

Tramadol is another med prescribed for some chronic pain.

    *************

There are supplements not strictly analgesics but helpful in some conditions like glucosamine/chondroitin for joints.

Arnica can be helpful for muscular pain, bruises etc

My cats are always micro-chipped and they are indoor only cats. I don't care to take chances. I do not put the plastic micro-chip on the collar. Each cat wears an elastic collar and a charm with cat's name and phone number on one side and the other side reads: Microchip xxxxxxxxxxxx I personally do not like the breakaway collars. They come off too often. The cat will actually slide out of the elastic collars if they get hung up on something. When I fill out the form for the micro-chip there is a place for my phone number and another number. I always use a family member for the other number who has had that number for years and will never change it.

If I were to answer Opiates, would you believe me? I am not an expert on cat medications and neither are over 90% of the responders here.

The trick is; who can your trust ?

Suggest that you do a internet search for """ CATS- PAIN - MEDICATION """ before you administer anything that is recommended here. There are people here who don't have to accept any responsibility if they give you the wrong information.

OH: and you CANNOT give a cat opiates.

No - ibuprofen is toxic to cats, as is Motrin and Advil. Even baby aspirin is dangerous for cats. Cats do not metabolize these drugs the same way humans (and dogs) do. If your cat is in pain, he needs to go to the vet. There is nothing you can get over the counter that's safe for your cat.

While I have heard of vets recommending certain human-pain killers, it really isn't a good idea. The dosage is very difficult to get right, and it can cause health problems. What kind of problem is your cat having? If it is joint pain, get glucosamine with MSM (an anti-inflammatory) for your cat.

None that is over the counter for humans. It will kill them. Only a vet can give you pain medication for your cat.

Absolutely no human meds for cats- aspirin, ibuprofen, tylenol are all toxic to them

The vet would prescribe buprenex or bupromorphine or what ever is appropriate for the level of pain
