Is dental assisting a mostly female job?
I recently saw an ad in the newspaper about a dental assisting school in my area and looked into that as a career a bit. From what I have seen so far it seems to be almost an all female type of job, and I myself am not a female. It isn't a huge issue either way, just looking to know what kind of situation I'm getting into if I do pursue this as a career.

YES. Dental assisting and dental hygienists are typically female. No real reason just that is how it has been. Men are getting into the field but usually it can be harder for them to find jobs and patients assume they are a dentist because they are male.
Nursing actually has more males getting into it now than dental assisting or dental hygiene. You can be whatever you want but if you are the type that doesnt like to feel put on the spot or cant handle dentists possibly discriminating against you then go ahead and do it. You do NOT need to go to school to become a dental assistant! You can learn on the job!
I suggest you apply to an orthodontic office as a "ortho assistant" same thing but you work alone a lot on patients, unlike a regular dental office. Or apply to any dental office that does not list 'experience' as a requirement. Some places say 'will train on the job for the right person'. Apply to jobs now dont waste your time in school for assisting!
Source(s): dental hygienist (there were 0 male assistants and 0 male hygiene students in the 2 years I was in school at a community college). The freshman class of the following year had 3 men in the hygiene program but again 0 assisting male students. Only 1 out of the 3 hygiene male students passed and graduated 2 years after me. - ScottLv 71 decade ago
If it gives any indication, i just asked my gf (dental hygienist) this question. She was in the program with 41 other people and said that none were male.

As with every job, there are both men and women, but hygenists are mostly females
