would you take your dog to an AKC CAT event?

sigh............NO!

I don't want mine to hare out after a lure. I want them to locate-using their noses,enter,& work their quarry IN-GROUND.

I totally would, if it is being run properly and safely. I have a Doberman, and they tend to love lure coursing and do really well at it (even if they cannot title for real in AKC).

I think that UKC has recently opened up lure coursing to non-sighthound breeds, A friend of mine has the first ever lure cousing titled APBT in UKC. I would be more likely to do this... a real title is better than an apptitude certificate, even if AKC is considering those titles.

Just a little bit irritating that this probably has nothing to do with the dogs, but just the AKC casting about for other sources of revenue.

Like Dogzzz, I have a prey-driven doberman that would probably enjoy it. I live in Canada - if the CKC opened it up to non-sighthound breeds - it might be fun.

My only reservvation is I don't need a dog that chases wabbits....and since I know nothing of lure coursing - I'm not sure if you have to train them in any particular way. If yes, - I wouldn't. But if you just open the gate and watch em run - maybe. If I had no plans for tracking with her, then it might be harmless enough.

Years ago I had a little 55 lb doberman that was faster than lightening - she would have been a real contender. Shame. :-)

Add: If its a plastic bag - it won't work. My dog is smarter than that. And it occured to me, she might not play well with the other kids. Sore loosers those dobermans.

My dogs already chase rabbits, I don't need them to do it more. Although it could be fun. From what I read about it the dogs are running by themselves, although I may have misread that.

I think some of my dogs would be great at it, although they might not care for chasing a plastic bag.

Edit- Ha, just looked at the results of the first 4 shows, there were a couple bulldogs doing it, I think that would cool to do with my guys.

If Ihad a dog that enjoyed it and had no issue chasing something with other dogs, then I would do it. I was at an AKC obed/conformation trial last summer and they had lure coursing and there was a major fight between a bunch of sight hounds.

We''re considering doing this for our standard schnauzers with our regional club. We've done coursing events each year for fun, now we can add a certificate!
