There's a mighty big difference between the employment opportunities you can obtain with a master's degree and PhD. So it's important that you first figure out what your ultimate career goals are so you know which one you need to go after. Like the others have already said, in order to become a licensed psychologist, you need to be a PhD holder. In addition to having your PhD you are generally required to complete an internship and/or up to two years of professional experience.

If you want to become a counselor on the other hand, such as addictions counselor, marriage/family counselor or school counselor for example, then you will need a master's degree. However, only licensed psychologists are allowed to prescribe any sort of medication—your job would be to give advice etc.

If you do not desire to pursue an advanced degree, a bachelor's in psychology can still pave some way for jobs that aren't necessarily directly associated with psychology—such as a career in marketing, sales, social work or teaching. However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal government does accept applicants who are bachelor degree holders. You must have at least 24 hours/credits of psychology coursework and one statistics course to get an entry level positions.

Psych majors are like English majors, they grow on trees. Get the phd if you ever hope to have a job.

Source(s): Met a number of people with degree's in psych, and I only ever heard of one of them ever getting a job that used their degree that person had a phd if I recall correctly.

the phd would be your better degree and you could use it to go for your doctorate which is the very top and with that you could then be called doctor .
