Miranda hit the nail on the nose. The M50 motor and on up use a timing chain. I had an 1992 520 over in Germany with an M50 2 liter six. Previous engine was the M20 with a belt.

I guess bandit thinks the BMW is FWD with the engine mounted sideways.

while you're making plans to get a BMW with intense miles, I advise getting some style of prolonged guarantee (the two dealership or a licensed Pre-Owned application). BMW upkeep is costly (like another luxury manufacturers), yet once you do the right upkeep, the motor vehicle could final you fairly a protracted time. issues like transmission, belts, will choose changing for each automobiles...they dont final consistently.

there,s 1 way you can tell. open the hood and see if it has a plastic cover on the passenger side of the engine. if it does then that,s the cover for the timing belt.

Your vehicle's serial # should have a code telling you what the motor is and should tell you what type of timing system is used.
