The idea of the rapture first came from a Spanish Jesuit named Manuel de Lacunza y Diaz who wrote a book called The Coming of Messiah in Glory and Majesty which was published in Spanish in 1812. Before this book, all Christians, Protestants, and Catholics DID NOT believe in the rapture. To understand this let's start with Matthew 24:

Matthew 24:37-41 – and as the days of Noah – so shall be also the presence of the Son of Man; for as they were, in the days before the flood, eating, and drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage, till the day Noah entered into the ark, and they did not know till the flood came and took all away; so shall be also the presence of the Son of Man. Then two men shall be in the field, the one is received, and the one is left; two women shall be grinding the mill, one is received, and one is left. (YLT)

The second part of this passage is where the “Left Behind” books and movies came from. However, they take the passage out of context. Look at the first part. This compares the second coming to the flood in Genesis. The people eating and drinking are clearly the non-believers. They get taken away by the flood, while the overcomers remain. So the non-believers "leave." This meaning can be confirmed in other verses. See my article on the rapture for more details: http://www.bible-study-lessons.com/Rapture.html God Bless.

The landscape below is a conception of how will be the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (the Son of Man) to Earth.

    ● Matthew 24:27 » For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

    ● Matthew 24:30 » and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

    ● Matthew 24:31 » And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

    ● Revelation 22:16 » I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.
