What gun laws would you make?
Let’s pretend that there is no 2nd amendment in the constitution. The government has just given you the task of writing the nation’s gun laws. What laws will you make?
This is hypothetical, so no 2nd amendment debates please.
Also, please state if you are Liberal, conservative, libertarian, or moderate.
Lots of interesting answers. Thanks guys.

I would add my version of the 2nd Amendment.
"The People are Guaranteed the right to own, keep, carry and use weapons suitable for defense of self, family and community. Government at all levels is prohibited from regulating, licensing or restricting this right."
Conservative Libertarian.

i have under no circumstances heard John Stassel being quoted as a valid source on some thing. you're a lot more suitable likely to get shot in Texas than you're in Vermont. Memphis, New Orleans and Miami are multiple the more suitable violent cities contained in the country and all are in southern states with somewhat "free" gun regulations. notwithstanding, in case you opt for to characteristic that basically to gun regulations then you definately'd be sort of an fool because there is clearly a lot more suitable to it than that.

Mentally sound and non violent crime on record. Hand guns and rifles. No heavy artillery or fully auto. Limit on purchases. Conservative. Forget the 2nd amendment, the bad guys will always have guns, people have a right the even the playing field.

Conservative, Every American has the right to own/carry any type of firearm they choose; unless they are felons, or mentally unstable as charged by a physician. That would be my gun law, to me, the 2nd amendment IS MY CONCEAL CARRY license!

Make all crimes committed with firearms a felony, with strict minimum sentencing. All crimes where the use of firearms result in death should carry a mandatory life sentence, minimum.
Conservative.
With or without the Bill of Rights, we still have the same rights, and among those is the right to bear arms.

Mandatory gun ownership unless you are mentally unstable, have a criminal record, are mentally handicapped or are physically unable to safely handle a firearm (born without hands or arms, or are blind). Automatic 10 years added to sentence for intentional misuse of a firearm. Life without parole for subsequent offense.

Canadian here,
1) Very very very hard to own a handgun, impossible to get a carry permit (example in Toronto 3 million people there are only 7 carry permits)
2) Use a gun in a crime, 5 years in addition to the crime, served first.
3) Gun training course for owning a long gun, must repeated every year that you own the gun.
I am very Liberal.

Screw rights to bear arms, the only civilian that should have firearms are licensed hunters.
I'm a conservative and Canadian. The issue on bearing arms is weak here, because we were never introduced to it in the first place. Keeps crime down and wackos away from dangerous toys.

I would allow the ATF to use computers to track the guns produced in the United States. Regardless where you stand on the 2nd Amendment, being able to track guns is a valid use of government resources. We do that with automobiles.

Liberal large (L)
I like the ones we have, maybe trim the gun show loophole but other than that the main points they seem fine. I think the hunting laws need to be changed, there are deer in the hills here they don't let me shoot.
