When inviting his listeners to reflect on his teaching, Jesus often said: "What do you think?" (Matthew 17:25; 18:12; 21:28; 22:42) In like manner, the apostle Peter wrote to fellow believers in order to 'arouse their clear thinking faculties.' (2 Peter 3:1)

The most widely traveled early missionary, the apostle Paul, exhorted Christians to use their "power of reason" and to "prove to [themselves] the good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:1, 2

To help others build such faith, early Christian evangelizers "reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving by references" the things taught. (Acts 17:1-3)

a number of people in the Macedonian city of Beroea "received the word [of God] with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things [explained by Paul and his companions] were so." (Acts 17:11)

Anyone inexperienced puts faith in every word, but the shrewd one 'considers'(requires reasoning) his steps.” — Proverbs 14:15.

The Bible can “give to the inexperienced ones shrewdness, to a young man knowledge and thinking ability.” (Proverbs 1:4)

“thinking ability itself will keep guard over you, discernment itself will safeguard you, to deliver you from the bad way.” (Proverbs 2:11, 12

Jesus Christ, taught that we must love God with our "whole mind," or intellect, in addition to our "whole heart" and "whole soul." (Matthew 22:37) Yes, our mental faculties must play a key role in our worship.

    Genesis

Adam & Eve "be fruitful and multiply" why does this god demand incest?

The Serpent- why does god punish his creation? why does he create a walking, talking reasoning creature, the most crafty of his creatures? Nowhere does Genesis state that the Serpent is Satan or Lucifer.

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the lord god had made. And he said to the woman, "Has god indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?'"

    2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, god has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' "

Although scripture tells us that the woman was created at the same time as the man, she was not formed until Genesis 2:22. the command was given in Genesis 2:17

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die."

5 "For god knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like god, knowing good and evil."

So god makes a walking, talking, reasoning reptile. Eve is blamed for succumbing to its thoughts. How are humans damned with original sin when it was god's fault all along?

How can xians believe that god sends innocent babies to hell if they arent baptized?

there- a few verses to reason/think/question... (dont even get on the "i am a jealous god" bit... or "there are other gods"! )

enjoy, seek knowledge, and be receptive

  • I don't have time to post the verses, but there are plenty of warnings to Christians to use reasoning to test for false Prophets and those that teach doctrine contrary to what the Apostles delivered to them. To hold to the doctrine that was delivered to them.

There are verses that warn against using mans reasoning, that man does not know the way because of his limited reasoning. God does things that we may not understand and can't understand because of our limitations.

The Apostles used reasoning (necessary inference) to ascertain what God wanted, even when he or Jesus did not directly give them instructions. For example, since the house of Cornelius was overcome by the holy Spirit, they ascertained that one did not need to be become a Jew by circumcision before one was baptized into Christ.

The Apostles encouraged being a study of scripture to the point where one could be a teacher. Not just set back and believe what everyone tells you, but be able to teach others the truth.

Those that teach will be held more accountable too!

There are very few Bible scriptures which encourage reasoning. Mostly the Bible is again reasoning as most people who reason use it against God.

Read the Fourth Book of Maccabees, it is all about reason.

Well, there are several. I don't have the references handy, but the story about the Bereans is telling. They searched the scriptures to see if what Paul was saying was correct, and he called them noble. The Word also tells us to worship God with our hearts and our minds. Adam was also told to subdue the garden, which includes studying it.

I'm amazed that people actually think that the bible doesn't encourage us to think. The entire book is full of puzzles and mysteries we are supposed to figure out, but they are designed so only christians can make sense of them. How can you read it and not know that?

    True wisdom comes from God

    read James Ch 3

Also, for those that ask for signs or proof, none will be given. Only to the believers. Foolish to the non-believers. But for us in Christ, we have faith.

    Read 1 Corinthians 1: 19-25

The entire Bible encourages reasoning. It takes a bit of thinking and questioning to seek the truth. However when you seek truth in God's Word you will find it. One must have a sincere desire to know God because without that God actually puts a veil over your eyes so you don't understand. God reveals Himself to those who search but hides from those who mock. In the end you will either be rewarded or put to shame.
