Why did Jesus rename Simon to Peter?

Peter means rock, and Jesus said "on this rock i will build my church" and He made Peter the first Pope, and so he built His church upon Peter.

Peter was a trasliteration done to make it a more compfortable and profitable experience for the failing Roman Empire. His real name was Shimeon Cephas, his last name meaning rock. Yahshua, the messiah, called him Kepha which was a Syrian pronunciation of his surname still meaning rock. Petros is a greek transliteration of this name. You should know that although Peter also conotates a rock, the man was not Greek. It could also be said that a closer look at the definitions shows that the rock "petros" is a simple rock while the rock Kepha is actually a much larger stronger stone.

He gave Peter the name Cephas or Rock. Meaning that Peter would lead or Guide the other Disciples after Jesus ascended back to Heaven.

Actually Jesus' half brother James became the true leader of the Church in Jerusalem and He and Peter sent forth disciples and missionaries into other lands.

When Jesus ask them who do men say that He is, Simon said you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said blessed you are Simon Bar-Jonah, For flesh and blood has not reveled this unto you, but my Father who is in Heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church....

Simon was called Peter by Christ for his statement he made. It was a solid truth and Peter was given authority, in the symbolic of the word keys. In Acts he used that authority. The (Rock) that Jesus was building his Church was based on that Solid foundation confessed by Peter that Jesus is the Christ. So the Church today who accepts Christ as the Son of God and adheres to the instructions of Peters preaching in reference to Acts 2:38-39, Verse 47 says that the Lord was adding to the Church daily those who were being saved.

He might be mistaken to be with Garfunkel than be with Him, so Peter then, meaning a Rock, like Dwayne Johnson, harder and tougher, soon to be a pillar of the Church.

Peter means rock. A stable steady person. You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. At least that is what Catholics think.
