YA Book recommendations- no romance.?

I'm out of books to read and was hoping you awesome people might have some recommendations. I like fantasy, but I like most anything, aside from non-fic and romance.

I'd rather read books aimed at young adults, preferably with very, very little romance. I'm looking for Children/ teenagers saving the day type books, but I don't care if it's from some mythical evil, non-magical criminals or nature. something like Treasure Island Kids is great, or something like fablehaven. I'm into super powered kids, but really, I'll read just about anything at this point.

smart villains and/or hostage taking/ kidnapping as part of the plot is a plus.

If you can, name more obscure books, as i spend too much time at the book store and know the newer books pretty well.

also, fanfiction that meets any of this criteria is welcome. just keep it K+

thanks again!

( also, if you put down ' Twilight', or anything similar, know that you have zero chance of getting best answer.)

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Backwater-Joan Bauer Book Details: In Backwater, Ivy Breedlove resists being good at the family tradition. For many generations the Breedloves have been successful lawyers. Among her loud and argumentative relatives, however, Ivy feels like "a goldfish swimming in a tank stocked with snapping turtles--it's hard to keep a lasting presence." Instead, Ivy is in love with history, especially the family history she is compiling. But a large piece is missing. Many years ago, her father's sister Josephine went away to be a hermit in the mountains, and ever since, the rest of the family has referred to her scornfully as "stuck in the backwater." Ivy, convinced that this "different" aunt holds the secret to her own differentness, sets out in a snowstorm to find Jo, with the help of backslapping, slogan-spouting wilderness guide Mountain Mama. Along the way she meets with a lot more adventure and understanding than she ever anticipated--not to mention snagging an excellent boyfriend.

The Juliet Club- Suzanne Harper Book Details: Italy . . . Shakespeare . . . but no romance?

Kate Sanderson inherited her good sense from her mother, a disciplined law professor, and her admiration for the Bard from her father, a passionate Shakespeare scholar. When she gets dumped, out of the blue, for the Practically Perfect Ashley Lawson, she vows never to fall in love again. From now on she will control her own destiny, and every decision she makes will be highly reasoned and rational. She thinks Shakespeare would have approved.

So when she is accepted to a summer Shakespeare symposium in Verona, Italy, Kate sees it as the ideal way to get over her heartbreak once and for all. She'll lose herself in her studies, explore ancient architecture, and eat plenty of pasta and gelato. (Plus, she'll be getting college credit for it - another goal accomplished!) But can even completely logical Kate resist the romance of living in a beautiful villa in the city where those star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet met and died for each other? Especially when the other Shakespeare Scholars - in particular Giacomo, with his tousled brown hair, expressive dark eyes, and charming ways - try hard to break her protective shell?

"In fair Verona, where we lay our scene . . . "

    Hope these help. - Cass

You would enjoy With A Silent Companion by Florida Town. It's the story of a young girl who has to disguise herself as a man in order to go to medical school and become a doctor, and who becomes a leading light in the surgical world. It's based on a true story. If your library doesn't have it, ask them to order it. If that doesn't work, you can find it on amazon.com in a paperback version.

If you read ebooks, go to smashwords.com and look at The Long Way Home - story about two teens who escape slavery and have to find their way home. It's had great reviews.

You can also check book websites' bestseller lists for fantasy like on Barnes and Noble's site or something. I find a lot of books that I want to read on there.

Jumper by Steven Gould. I'm currently reading it and the writing is pretty good (first person) and so far it's 10Xs better than the sucky movie.
