Dog vaccinations: DHPP vs just distemper/parvo?

Hello, I have two dogs who are due for their first yearly booster of the DHPP vaccine (they had their puppy rounds, now they are about 13 months old and ready for their first adult round), but I have heard contradicting things. I have heard that puppies should get a distemper/parvo booster (not the whole 7-way DHPP booster) at one year, then that's it (except for rabies boosters as required by law).

What is the new opinion on vaccine boosters? Does anyone have a website I can look at? My vet is very old-fashioned and will probably not agree with this new information, but I would like to be informed. I usually give my dogs the vaccinations myself, so cost isn't an issue, but I am curious if this is really something that is changing, or just gossip.

Thanks in advance!

Update:

Also: I give my dogs Heartgard monthly (I do not live in an area prone to heartworm, but I travel to CA a lot, which is prone). My vet wants to do a heartworm test (because dogs in my area usually do not take monthly heartworm medication), but I think it's unnecessary if they are taking their monthly medicine. Thoughts?

you should only get the 7 in 1 if you live in an area prone to Lepto. Otherwise I do the 5 in 1 every 3 yrs with the rabies booster

Don't know about the law over there in the States but dog vaccinations are voluntary in the UK. It is a good idea to have your dog vaccinated as a puppy - especially if it is a pedigree and you have paid a lot of money for it. We have not vaccinated our dog for the last three years ( he is now 6) because we have not had to put him in kennels when we go on holiday - and a full vaccination certificate is needed for the kennel. I believe that the vaccinations are only being pushed by the vets because it makes them stacks of money - the dog will have a good immunity after having the first shots and the first year booster - I am positive that further jabs actually harm the animal.

each are ailments that any canines can settlement. do no longer forget approximately rabies. each shot is named precisely for what they vaccinate against. Parvo is a pandemic, this is marked by using loss of urge for meals, torpid habit, oftentimes bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and in some situations loss of existence. i do no longer stop understand precisely what distemper is however the definition is as follows: To temper badly. Which i might desire to purely assume that without the vaccination the canines might desire to finally end up with a bad temperment without the vaccination. Bordetella is merely a posh call for Kennel Cough, that's a many times used term used to describe what we people call the consumer-friendly chilly. that's a species particular ailment. this suggests you may't supply your canines your chilly and he can't supply you his chilly. Rabies vaccinations are style of like the flu shot. The canines has to have the vaccination each 365 days because of the fact's barely stable for a 365 days. i do no longer beleive that is going to wreck to "over vaccinate" there is merely plenty ailment obtainable that an animal can settlement, merely like we are able to. quite your merely taking preventative mesaures to insure they won't ensue interior the destiny. in case you have got all of those vaccinations administered i might do a infant week and then something the subsequent week. quite purely vaccinations a puppy quite needs to have is in my opinion, Parvo, and Rabies. Rabies for particular each 365 days, because of the fact something everywhere can take place at each time. you will possibly be able to desire to be out strolling your canines, and your canines might desire to be attacked by using a rabid animals, and not purely canines carry Rabies, different animals do too. Parvo is amazingly contagious to different canines, so if your plannin to board your canines at a kennel i might definitly vaccinate for parvo, rabies, and kennel cough. as far as value, it relies upon on what vet you seek for care from and what element of the Globe you survive. i might additionally examine around with distinctive vets and examine the fees in the previous merely going to a minimum of one.
