Do you think Bill Maher's description of the teabagger mindset is accurate?

"You have to understand the teabagger mindset. They have this nostalgia for this America that they think was stolen from us, that used to be, that was better. It's really the 1950's. That's what they think was Shangri La. What they never get is that is that it's kind of insulting to a lot of Americans to pine for this era because it wasn't that good for a lot of people. It was good if you were a white man. It wasn't that good if you were Mexican, or black, or Jewish, or disabled, or gay, or a woman."- Bill Maher

Absolutely. If you read a basic history book, you'll understand that while that era was famous for being some superficial image of the American Dream due to its economic and invention boom, the minority and oppressed groups weren't reaping many benefits.

Many neighborhoods were explicitly racist and prejudiced against gays, and women weren't able to hold certain positions and still don't get paid as much as men.

EDIT: I actually attended an event put on by Maher last night. He brought up this issue. He said that he won't stop calling the tea party teabaggers until they stop calling liberals marxists, communists, or socialists. I don't call the group teabaggers, but he has a point.

Source(s): Basic US history Plus, I'm reading a book for an education class about the neighborhoods during the time

Bill Maher doesn't know crap. The fact that he uses the word teabagger shows his immaturity and lack of understanding of the real issue- which is government spending it out of control. That is all it is. Maher has no clue what he is talking about, but then again, neither do most Liberals.

That's the religious wing of the tea party. They are irrelevant. What is the true meaning of the tea party is the libertarian philosophy of small government, maximum freedom and civil liberties. The biggest reason it started was the govt spending us into oblivion. The debt is already $14 trillion. If it wasn't for tea party, they would never even be debating cuts

whilst I agree that the Fifties weren't that large of a time for many human beings, Tea occasion contributors, a minimum of not myself and those Tea occasion contributors i understand, do not what the Fifties in any way shape or form. We merely want smaller government, economic accountability, and for human beings to be held responsible for their own movements--the two sturdy and undesirable. not immediately i don't think of which skill I "pine" for the Fifties.

So our economic and political downfall was caused by giving civil rights to minorities? That's a pretty racist/sexist comment if you ask me!

But seriously, he's trying to take an economic argument and make it into something it's not to fit his political agenda. Anyway, most tea party members would probably want it to be the 1980s so they could have Reagan back.

    not at all accurate...

if anything liberals are dillusional, they talk about reclaiming wealth when many never had money to begin with. They talk about the american dream like it's something that's supposed to be given....the american dream is something supposed to be earned by working and THEN you get to have a house, nice car, land, etc....you don't just have it all of a sudden, and you don't get it by living outside of your means. Also...in the 50's there were many Jews doing pretty decent. In the 1950's mexico wasn't doing half bad for them to need to come up here. Blacks in many parts of the country such as seattle and more northern countries were doing pretty well.

No but I find it interesting that no matter how many times they are corrected Liberals still confuse Taxed Enough Already people with those engaging in an oral sex activity known as " teabagging " which Liberals obviously have a fixation with.

To understand what Bill Maher says, you have to understand that he had a failed acting career before he took a show on a cable channel.

  • No I don't. Bill Maher is a gas bag. They want to bring fiscal responsibility to the present.
