Which ovary does the egg come from?
Seriously. Women release one egg a month. But there are two ovaries. So which ovary does the egg come from? Do they alternate? Is it possible for them both to release one?

Both ovaries work all the time, just like both kidneys work all the time, and both lungs inhale and exhale together. Each starts to mature eggs each month, then the first egg to fully develop is released. When it does that it produces hormones that make the other eggs shrink and go away. So usually, one egg is released, and it can come from either ovary--it just depends on which ovary that month wins the race to have an egg develop first. Each month is a new race. But on average, half the time the egg comes from one ovary, half the time from the other. It IS possible for them both to release one, just as it is possible for one ovary to release two eggs in a given month. If that happens, and the woman gets pregnant, she'll have fraternal twins (twins that are not identical). Or she could have triplets, etc. In addition to releasing eggs, ovaries constantly produce hormones that are crucial to your health and normal functioning. They both release these hormones, they do not alternate.

It's not like they take turns, and often one will release more than the other, depending on the number and quality of the ovary. It is possible for both to release, it is also possible for one to release 2, it's called twins! :) Some women do feel a pinching when they ovulate, and that is the releasing of the egg, but many don't feel a thing (I myself do not). I hope that answers your question.

I just had an ultrasound done and the technician said one of my ovaries looked more ummm, I think she said bloaded, or something like that...can't remember exact words, then she said, "so you probably will ovulate from this one....so now we just need to figure out if they alternate lol
