Why did people get so excited about William and Kate's wedding?

I mean both of them have absolutely no power. The king in the UK doesn't even mean anything. They just live in their royal family and do nothing for the country or anything else.

So, why did millions watch their wedding? What's so special about it? To me their wedding is not any more special than when David Beckham married. Why all this hype and excitement?

Can someone please explain? Millions of people watched it live and billions on TV. But why? What is so special about those two people?

We celebrated because we could. A public holiday was called, many of us got a day off. We celebrated because we have a heritage and tradition dating back to before old Columbus ever thought about getting on a ship, a heritage that our Royal family represents. But most of all I celebrated because just for one day there was nothing on the news about people suffering around the world or politicians wrangling for public opinion. Just for one day most people were happy, celebrating, having fun and remembering the strength of their own communities. Sorry you cant see the point in that but hey, that's your problem.

xu, you are wrong, it is not the Royal family that defines the British people, it is the people themselves and the Queen does not have the power to do the things that you claim, it is just the silly routine that is always done for most of these things, Parliament however does have the power to remove the Monarchy and it is a pity that they don`t exercise that right.

The Monarchy throughout history has been supported by the people because of fear of not doing so, most Kings and Queens would not have had a second thought about executing many of their people just to keep them in order, in fact, many did just that, they used their power to enforce a belief system on their subjects, Henry V111 and Queen Mary did that very thing and murdered thousands of their subjects but the people still supported them and we all know why, the Royal family come from a long line of ruthless brutal power hungry dictators and even though the lines of the Royal families change, they all are from the same sort of people and are mostly of either French or German ancestry, I cannot see why people were excited about the marriage, I would only be excited if the whole lot were disbanded, I hate the fact that we take one ordinary family and treat them as though they are different than the rest of us and we supply them a life of utter opulence and wealth while we go to work to pay for them, the Royal family have no use in the modern world, the old pomp and spectacle should be left in the past along with their murderous rulers.

It's a tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years. It is interesting in that it is a line of continuity and pageantry that takes us back to years gone by. Furthermore, although the royal family has no real power. They are sort of like The Constitution. The Constitution is what makes us American. The Royal Family is what defines the British nation.

Furthermore, the monarch does actually have power that but it is rarely exercised. The monarch can:

The monarch has the power to:

    Choose the Prime Minister.

    Dismiss ministers and governments.

    Dissolve Parliament.

Refuse to agree to legislation passed by Parliament.

Dismiss the governments of other countries of which she is monarch.

    Pardon convicted criminals.

    Declare a state of emergency.

    Issue proclamations.

Command the army and raise a personal militia.

    Ok so there is no

king of England they have a queen. They actually so casts amounts if charitable work ( the queen is 85 and she is doing 50 days of public engagements this year) and they both have jobs.

Personally I am a republican however I was excited about the wedding for several reasons.

    History in action

it's lovely to see people who genuinky love each

I felt sorry for him after his mother died

and I wanted to be a princess when I grew up and everyone always said they don't marry commonors- well katie just bagged a royal and she is living tge dream.

I don't think everyone should be excited but I think a little magic and celebration is always welcome especially with the world they way it is now

On the one side, it's the Disney thing. You know, the pomp and circumstance and all that. People need something to be excited about.

On the other, it's media hype. They puff events like this for all they're worth in order to distract people's attention from the problems that surround them.

I remember being very excited about Princess Di's wedding, but then she did the whole "magic carriage" scene etc. and she was so beautiful. I have to admit I gave this wedding a miss. I'm older now and so is the world.

Bcoz there is a kid hiding inside each of us who still love to hear that fairy tale story ending up like "......then the Prince and Princess got married and happily lived everafter."

Because they are prince and princess.

I guess everyone had a dream of becoming a royal family.

Anyway..I don't watch because it is not important to me in life or afterlife.

    It is a mystery.

When I first heard about the royal wedding I was like okay.

Then I heard about it again. Then again and again and again and again and again and now whenever someone says "royal wedding" I want to kill them. CNN was covering the wedding while I was at work and I nearly ripped the TV off its stand. After the wedding was finished they had a panel of retards sit around and reminisce about it. "Memories from the Royal wedding" You stupid twats! You were just there!
