Some advice from Christians please/religious people?
This is a petty problem, but I'd like some research and verses to the following problem.
I grew up in a household where we were taught to be open minded. We went to several different churches. I'm into science, i do my research, I like to learn. I dont go throwing my bible at people or bashing others for their beliefs, so when I"m attacked I dont like it. Here is my problem. I have a friend who has recently been on a hating God speal and literally every time I talk about it he bashes it. I believe in God, that Jesus died on the cross for my sin's yatta yatta and every time I'm around him he bashes my belief but the minute I try to stick up for myself when I've had enough of his negativity he says "Your "bible" tells you that wemon should shut the hell up and be submissive to their husbands and not ask questions unless asked by them, that all wemon should be to men, so I suggest you shut the hell up when talking to me" needless to say I doubt we'll be friends after that conversation. I was in utter shock. Where does it say this in the bible? i've never been taught such a thing by my church nor my family. I've read the bible but everyone interprets it different. my closing argument was "Well since your such a smarty pants please quote verse and chapter as to where it says that?" he hasn't said anything yet............ Please, where does it say this, and how can I keep my cool around people so negative and nasty as this? I dont mean to whine, but I keep to my own and he was completely out of line. Doesn't give me much hope for those who don't believe, To be that mean and negative towards someone just because of what they believe in. I dont even preach to him, nor say whats on my mind unless I'm asked, but yet "Christians" are always the bad guy. pathetic isn't it???? Thank you for your time, and answers.
I'm sorry I meant to say everytime he talks about it, he bashes it. I dont say anything about it unless I'm asked. Or called names lol
To the first four people, ya, thats how has his arguments......now some actual chapters and verses please............next!
WOW I want to thank all of you who actually answered my question. I had a few non believers in their and I really appreciate your answers. They were kind and sincere. I wish you many good thoughts! for those who are religious, many good blessings. (I'd say that to the non believers, but I dont want to offend anyone.) Thank you for being a support I really appreciated that you all had verses to show me and all gave me an opinion on what you thought of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I will be taking all your advice............not to be this guy's friend anymore. I wish I could give you all ten points!

People who hate God and His word like to throw bible verses at those who love God and His word, and they have little patience for context or understanding of anything being explained to them. However, these verses had to do with the synagogues of the day. Women and men were separated within the synagogue. The verse referred to women calling out to their husbands during the teaching, trying to understand something. Don't do that, the writer of this verse was instructing. Keep silent in the synagogue and converse with your husband once you got home.
Few people really want to know the meaning of scripture. They just want to ridicule you for your belief in it. If you are a follower of Christ and a lover of God and his word, here's a tip: never get angry. Let people say what they will. Then find out an answer and calmly give it to them. God is working on your friend's heart, even though it's coming through as a very hostile question. There is a verse in the bible, a soft word turns away wrath. Be gentle, humble, loving, kind. That is how people see Christ in us.

Correct me if I am wrong. The guy is a backslider (otherwise, he would not know that there is such a taching in the Bible . He backslid may be because of some personal problems and or some indifferences with his Church. Apparently he has heard teaching regarding submission of wives to their husbands as the Church submits to Christ. This was the teaching of Paul in Ephesians 5:22 and by Peter in 2 Peter 3:1. Paul also ordered that during the worship these women, who I supposed, have been very noisy during the worship service, were ordered by Paul to keep silent (in 1 corinthians 14:34-35. Some Churches have over magnified this particular teaching of Paul. They forbid women to be in the ministry (which in my opinion and with due respect, is out of context). Maybe this is the kind of Church your friend came from. All the while he hated God for he thought this was God's teaching himself.
I suggest, that if you love him romantically, just keep on praying for God to change his views. And put some distance for awhile so that he will not pull your spirituality down. otherwise, if he is just your friend, pray for him also but do not "equally yoked with the unbelievers.

It's in one of Paul's letters, Corinthians I believe. There used to be a troll on here who kept posting those verses and asking if people would let women preach to their children. If you want to know the exact verse just wait until he posts again.
I just finished reading a very good book, "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism," by John Shelby Spong. While I do not agree with every conclusion the author makes, he has a good argument for why we should not treat the Bible as God's inerrant truth. It was written down by humans, and reflects a human understanding of the nature of God. Paul's letters especially were written as advice to specific churches in a specific time period, and Paul himself would have been the last to claim that his letters were the inspired and inerrant word of God.
When I get into arguments with people about these things, I like to be educated. It helps me keep my temper and mitigates the frustration of knowing I'm right without being able to express it. The books I find myself drawing from the most are Lee Strobel's "The Case for Christ" and "The Case for a Creator." But if you don't want to spend the time or money to read them, a good basic argument when faced with outdated Bible verses is to reply that the Bible was written down by humans and is thus subject to human error, but reflects a knowledge of morality and science that could not have come from the time in which it was written. The kosher laws in Leviticus, written down twenty-five hundred years ago, reveal a working knowledge of germ theory before anyone had the concept that diseases came from microscopic organisms rather than the wrath of the gods.

Teeny, the best thing to do is, avoid these people and don't try to explain anything to them { Shake the dust off your sandals } . All you do is cause conflict and give yourself grief for no reason. As far as all this bologna about women being quiet in church and being submissive to their husbands, take it with a grain of salt ! Paul was speaking to a bunch of mouthy women in the church at Corinth a couple a thousand years ago; Not you. Also the crack about wives submitting to their husbands, marriage is a 60 - 60 percent contract between to people who love each other and have mutual respect for each other. Don't get involved with these ignoramuses it's a waste of time.By the way Paul bless his heart was an old bachelor. Oh, I've been happily married for 57 years.

I'm not Christian or religious but even I know it's not right to bash someone's beliefs. Sounds like your ex-friend has a lot of hate in his heart. Yes, I've heard it said in the bible that women should be submissive to their husbands and be their husband's helper. However, there are many different version of the bible and the bible is notorious for being mistranslated, especially by cultures who believe women to be inferior.
In earlier versions of the texts, many of the words and names were radically different and not demeaning to women.
Here's the verse in the King James version of the bible that states that women should be submissive:
1 Corinthians 14:34
"the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak but should be in submission, as the Law also says."
Titus 2:4
"and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled."

Everyone knows at least one negative person that sucks the joy out of everyone. Do not take his comments personally. He doesn't dislike you he is just an emotionally unhappy person. Do not counter react to his bible bashing. Negativity is toxic. Protect yourself against his rantings, and disrespectful behavior because Jesus is more than capable to defend Himself.
Gutenberg produced the first printed Bible in Latin during 1356 A.D. I think any book that has been around for over 1700 years and is the most widely circulated book in the history of the world and has long surpassed the test of time has Proven Substance. Science is agreeing with it. Prophesies have been fulfilled. History and time revel it. The bible has changed the lives of people. That takes more than Faith. That is also Evidence, Truth, and Perfection.

There are several Bible passages used to justify men's domination of women within Christian theology. The following is oft quoted by the Roman Catholic, Episcopalian and Orthodox churches (among many others) in defence of their respective policies that deny women the right to be ordained as ministers or priests:
1st Corinthians, Chapter 14, Verses 34/35:
"Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. (35) And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church."
Being "mean and negative just because of what they believe in" could be described as sectarianism, a tactic used by Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Atheists so, remember, that attitude is nothing to do with your friend being an atheist any more than you being "open-minded" is anything to do with your being a Christian. There are plenty of aggressive / violent / insane people in all creeds, just as there are kind / empathetic / gentle people. Being a Christian (or a Muslim, Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, Atheist, whatever) does not define you as a good or bad or intelligent or stupid person. There are, however, plenty in every faith who will try to tell you that unless you adhere to their viewpoint then you are evil / stupid / less than human.
For my part, I am an Atheist happy to hold my peace unless anyone tries to claim superiority of their viewpoint, or who feels proselytising their faith gives them special rights or protection. It doesn't, so perhaps you can remind your friend if he wants to discuss theological issues then ask he should do so with due respect to you and others - while striving to maintain such standards yourself, of course - while sustaining what sounds like a really passionate point of view.

As you can see from most of these answers, Christians have a pretty bad name in today's society. It's difficult to let go of the past... and many aspects of the present. It's easy to generalize a group, especially a religious one. Just remember your personal relationship with God and try to find joy in forgiving people who treat you that way. I completely understand your feeling of frustration and anger; I can get very defensive as well when people say those ignorant and unnecessary things.
Obviously this guy was trying to use the Bible against you with his misinterpretation. Lots of non-believers choose this route, but Christianity isn't all about Old Testament Laws. In fact, it's about... I don't know, three percent of its significance?
The Bible never says a woman cannot speak unless spoken to! The Hebrew Bible throws in a couple of submissive, even oppressive, passages, but I don't see them as crucial to our faith. After all, women have been important disciples, martyrs, and warriors of God since Christ walked. Try the website http://www.gotquestions.org/ if you have more Biblical-based questions. They rely heavily on the Bible, but are still helpful with these deeper questions. God bless! :D

Actually, the Corinthian church would not allow women to speak in the churches.
If you're looking for the verse where it says that, See Corinthians, Saint Paul says it.
But Jesus the Christ himself claimed that we're all equal, but we basically have different roles in life sometimes.
1 Corinthians 7:2 - "But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. the husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband". - Saint Paul.
1 Corinthians 14:34 "Women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says." - Saint Paul.
Now that could be either TWO things, simply the rules for the Corinthian church, or merely Paul's opinion.

Eph 5:22 Wives, [be in subjection] unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the church, [being] himself the saviour of the body.
Tell this guy that he is not your husband, so you don't need to submit to him. If you are not yet married, then Christ is your husband, and you submit only to Him. Jesus has commanded us to preach the gospel, so if you preach to your "friend" you are obeying your husband.
