1996 Honda accord transmission won't shift and speedometer quit?

Yes, this is a common problem on the Honda's of this vintage. The VSS Vehicle speed sensor has a connector that stands straight up (located on the transmission under the throttle body) and if any kind of water or fluids drip on the sensor it collects in the connector and starts to corrode the pin in the VSS. Disconnect the connector and clean out both the sensor connector and the wiring harness connector with brake cleaner, check the pins for green corrosion and reconnect and recheck operation if still a problem you will need to replace the VSS.

Im guessing this is all related, Look on carcomplaints.com this is apparently a problem over all with the honda accord for poor quality transmissions From 97 to 2011 there are over 5 thousand complaints from all over the place, some years like the 08 and 07 the 96 had only eight complaints so from the standpoint there are a hundred thousand 96 hondas sounds like not all of them were a problem, still at some point you will need to get yours fixed, what ever you do, do not go to aamco, there are thousands of comlaints in almost every state, and attorney generalls in many states have filed suit on behalf of consumers

Hmm, I've seen this before, and I have to caution you that it is quite often a sign that someone was messing around with the odometer. Possibly disconnecting the cluster to prevent miles from adding on, or attempting to roll back the odo. Did you just get this vehicle? Have you removed the cluster and checked the wiring? Are the miles rolling right? They probably stop when the speedo is inop!! Good luck..good chance the vehicle is TMU!

Like someone above stated probably the vss has a bad connection or its just plain bad. Sometimes a quick check with a multimeter will tell. Take a multimeter and connect the leads to the vss and wave a wrench in front of the sensor you should see a slight generation of ac voltage.

that model does not have a cable. a quick check to see if its the VSS of the speedo is when you drive and the speedo quits see if the cruise control still works. If it does the VSS is good and the speedo itself it bad if not replace the VSS vehicle speed sensor on the trans

Honda so damn overrated, check your transmission fluid, if good it could be just a speed sensor if your lucky.
