'05 honda civic, how often do you have to change the timing belt?

don't know much about hondas, but i know changing the timing belt is a big job to be doing often. my gf's mechanic told her she has to change it soon. she only has 25k miles on it and there is no indication of anything being wrong with the car. i don't trust mechanics out there, i'd rather hear it from someone who knows, but is not after my money. thanks.

I have an 04 Civic. I had my timing belt changed at about 115K miles, which is pretty late. 100K miles is the time to think about changing it. Mine hardly looked worn, but I knew it was important to change it anyway. The problem with not changing a timing belt, at the proper time is this: The timing belt forms a connection between the crank shaft and the camshaft, to control timing of the opening and closing of the valves. The valves are supposed to be closed when the piston is stroking upward and compressing the air fuel mixture in the cylinder. If the timing belt were to break, a valve or a few valves could remain open as the piston is stroking upward. The top of a piston could ram into a valve, causing major engine failure. If you were lucky you might only bend a valve and you would only need to have your head pulled off and rebuilt for 1200 or 1500 bucks or whatever it costs. If you were unlucky, the piston could get a hole poked through the top of it or you could seize a piston. That would require a full engine rebuild. Major $$$. Bottom line is, breaking a worn timing belt is a major risk for your engine. Usually, you would have your water pump replaced at the same time, since it is accessible during a timing belt change. It would be more costly if you had to replace a water pump later. It's better to change the pump, when you have everything apart, to do the timing belt. I live in California

Update: I have my 04 Honda Civic EX owners manual sitting right here in front of me. It calls for the following: "Replace timing belt and inspect auto-tensioner and water pump, every 110 thousand miles. or every seven years, whichever comes first." So, replacing a timing belt at 25K seems like a big scam, unless there was a major issue, like water leaking out of the water pump, then you might want to at least inspect the timing belt, while you have everything opened up to do the water pump. Like I said before, pump and timing belt normally get done together. One small qustion. Are you sure she has an 05 Civic, with only 25k original miles on it? That seems very low. I have put 131 k miles on my 04 Civic

    2005 Honda Civic Timing Belt

The interval on the 05 Civic is 110K miles or 7 years. Being a rubber product the timing belt is age sensitive. Honda belts are conservatively rated so there is no need to change it early, but don't play the game too long.

One of the "gotchas" with timing belts is they give no warning at all. One second the car is cruising along and the next it has suffered serious valve damage. Timely replacement is the only defense.

On a 2005, the timing belt is recommended to be replaced at 105,000 miles or 7 years. You are getting close on the time but not the miles. The reason for the 7 year time frame is that the rubber breaks down over time due to ozone in the air. It is also recommended by most mechanics to replace the water pump at the same time.

Timing belts are generally changed between 60k-100k miles depending on the model, if you can get ahold of the original owner's manual it will definitely say in there. Also try searching online, maybe on Honda's website, and see if they state the requirement there somewhere. 25k miles is nowhere near the requirement for replacement.

timing belt is about 50-70 bucks depending on if u only get the belt or the belt and a new tensioner definately go with the kit) and the water pump is about 40-60 bucks. Also, Gates is a reputable manufacturer, go with them.

If you live in an area that has Extreme winters, meaning temperatures at zero or colder then 60,000 miles is recommended. If you live in a moderate climate as in Florida or California then 90,000 is the standard. There are different standards for the V-6 engines and this can be as much as 105,000 miles. Hope this helps.

i replaced the timing belt on my 01 accord (4 cylinder) at 110k miles

If you drive it like an old person the belt should last 100k easily

But after 100k i'd start sweating about it, if it breaks your valves are F'd

the parts are cheap, its the labor that kills ya. Its really not that hard to do, just takes some time. you have to take a good amount of stuff apart, and making sure that you get the timing belt lined up correctly in crucial. its good to also replace the valve cover gaskets while you have it off and all the other belts too. you can get a kit for about 180 that has all the gaskets and belts, or you can just buy the timing and pump separately for for like 30 bucks for the timing belt and water pump for about 60ish.
