Abusive 16yr old brother?
My 16 year old brother is very verbally abusive towards my 12 year old sister. He says horrible things.. for example "I hope you get raped by a gang of aboriginals,i hope you die of cancer,," ect..
Am i right in thinking that this will effect her mental health later in life?
Is there anything I can do?

It will affect her mental health later in life. It will affect her emotional development now. You must intervene in anyway you can.
Do you think you can get the support of one of your parents? If so, talk to that parent or both of them about this.
If your parents are not available for some reason, then you can make an enourmous difference by not standing silently by during the verbal abuse. You may not be able to physically intimidate him. However if your take your sister's side it will be TWO against one. If you use some teamwork, you can get him to back off. Even if it is verbal teamwork. You will be amazed at the power of two against one.
Even if you do not succeed in shutting him up, you will succeed in something else, that may be even more important later in life for your sister. You will succeed in giving her the feeling that she is not totally alone in her fear and mental anguish. She probably feels so sad her older brother would abuse her in such a way and she probably feels very alone. The feeling that even ONE person cares and loves you in such circumstances is INCREDIBLY meaningful, especially later in life.

This is your parent's battle. For now, take your sister to the side and talk to her. Make sure she knows you are there for her. Give her a chance to open up to you and to vent. Allow her time to cry and be emotionally free for a time until she feels ok. Then talk to her about how your brother has a problem and it makes him act out in inappropriate ways. Then talk to your parents. Your brother need s to be seen by a mental health professional asap. He obviously feels some sort of insecurity to berate someone in an attempt to feel better about himself. Your parents may not be aware of the situation. Have them also talk to your sister with you present. Allow your sister to use you as a comforting presence. If she feels uncomfortable, have a safety word where the meeting can take a break and she can relax. She should also go to see a school counselor to make sure she is OK. If you are old enough, get her out of the house with your parents permission, I don't know how old you are, but even going out into the yard or to the park w/o your brother can offer a relief to her and a chance to relax. Remember, she is probably feeling very alone and abandoned, she may be feeling as if what your brother is saying is true. He may be hurting or may have a mental illness.

Maybe if letting him know he's doing wrong doesn't work (surely he's smart enough to work that out for himself though) then don't get mad, get even. I know that two wrongs don't make a right but this bloke is a selfish shite! It sounds like he's trying to take all your sisters self-esteem which in turn will allow him to bully and control her without her standing up for herself. Maybe someone should ask him if he thinks he's an adult and then inform him that he's behaving like a moron! Treat him like the little boy he's behaving like and tell him how disappointing his lack of respect is and that respect is a two way street and he hasn't earned any. Maybe if he wants to be treated grown up he should stop mentally abusing children - he won't like that comment! If all else fails then it might come to sibling fisticuffs and he'd deserve a thorough embarrassment. Oh boy, being beaten up by a girl, very macho! Good luck with taming the unruly brat!

Dude you need to do something A.S.A.P because this is a serious subject.. I suggest you talk to your Parents and recommend Counseling.. This could and will effect her Mental health in the near future.. And at just 12 years it can even be reported as Abuse to the Police.. Hope you work something out because he needs to be dealt with immediately..

it possibly will affect her mental health. my 10 year old brother wishes me dead all the time, and so does my 16 year old sister and it really starts to hurt.
I don't think there is much you can do, well at least my mom doesn't try.
xx good luck

First, tell your brother to stop being so mean because this is really bad.
Shes barely a teen! Tell him to back off the next time it happens.
Then go to your sister and ask her if any of the stuff he says affects her.
Make sure you give her lots of love!

This will DEFINITELY affect her. The only thing you can do is try and stop him from saying these things and try to understand why his says them. Situations like this can permanently destroy a relationship if not dealt with in the beginning. You can also try to "console" your sister as well, sometimes, it helps to know someone cares.

my brother used to do the same thing to me, until i started beating him up when he said that stuff. though i doubt you should beat up your brother at first. tell him that what hes doin is wrong. if he doesn't stop get a parent involved. There's gotta be some kind of consequnce to make him change his mind.
