Can a first-time dog owner get a blue heeler puppy?

I've been looking through local ads (classifieds, craigslist, etc) because me and my parents are interested in getting one puppy (we are all first-time dog owners, pet owners for that matter). Based on cost and interest, I found a person selling seven 5-week old Queensland Heeler puppies (also called an Australian Cattle dog, Blue Heeler, and Red Heeler) ~ all have had their first set of shots.

From what I've read, they are smart dogs but require plenty of exercise. Also, although they are technically herding dogs, we want to keep one as a pet. Is this or will it be a little too much to ask of ourselves based on our inexperience? What are your thoughts/experience?

We are all eager and loving and having a large backyard and spacious house. Thanks.

If you are sure you know everything you need to know about the dog, that means learning all about the breed, what exactly they need, how to train them, feed them, etc. Then yes i say you'd be fine. My first dog was a weimaraner, a dog people say to never get for your first dog, but he turned out to be the most amazing dog.

  • Blue Heelers are very smart.....BUT, if you do not know exactly what a blue heeler requires, I HIGHLY suggest NOT getting one. Heelers need jobs to do like herding...Without these "jobs" a heeler can be VERY destructive. For a first time dog owner, I recommend staying away from this breed. Look up Non-sporting or hunting breeds..and you should get a vast array of breeds to choose from.

If they are willing to let him go home they must not be very good breeders! Puppies should stay with their mom and littermates until at least 8 weeks old! They Learn a lot from their brothers and sisters in that time and their moms will help discipline them.

Think twice before taking home a 5 week old pup.

And to answer your question, if you are willing to put in time every day in order for the dog to get enough exercise it will be fine. Don't expect to keep him locked up at home every day and never take him out and think he will be a good dog.

Also keep in mind you shouldn't take him for a walk or anything until he has all his shots. So for the first month or two you will have to get him to exercise indoors only or in your backyard where no dog has been. Otherwise he could get diseases such as parvovirus.

I prefer taking in older dogs--puppies are very needy and have a pitch in their whines that really gets to me. If you know you like puppies, and are willing to do all a puppy needs, go for it. It's pretty amazing in a way--puppies are love that money can buy! (Or so I've read!)
