4th disk: S.M.A.R.T. status bad, backup & replace?

4th disk: S.M.A.R.T. status bad, backup & replace - what does this mean ?

I get this message upon booting up, I press F2 to continue & again I get 4th disk: S.M.A.R.T. status bad, backup & replace

I've tried formatting the hard drive & it wont format or allow re-install of OS.

The PC only has one sata hard drive which is less than a year old.

I am I right in thinking the HD has failed ?

Update:

4th disk: - I should of put 4th slave hard disk:

You are correct, it's failing. The S.M.A.R.T warnings are generated by the drive itself, alerting you to the problem. I suspect it's on your 4th SATA connector that's why it reports as #4.

That's the thing about hard drives, there's no guarantee how long any individual drive will last... manufacturers don't know, they only know the MTBF (mean time between failures) for all drives of a given model/line, which includes units that last 10 years and units that are DOA before they hit store shelves.

Anyway.. less than a year old, it might still be under warranty.
