Are certain colorings gender linked?

Someone said all ginger tabbies are male and all calicoes are female. Is this true? My ginger tabby is a male, but I have never known many other cats. Have you ever known a female ginger tabby or a male calico?

Over 99% of Tortie/Calico patterned cats are female. There's FAR more Red Tabby females than some think. I think it's about 75% male. Here's info as to "why" http://stason.org/TULARC/animals/cats/misc-faq/006...

Not 'all'. Ginger is usually a male color (females can be 'red'). Tortoishell and calico are usually females. All three are gene linked to the sex chromosomes, but you get exceptions -- like male calicos and orange striped females.

Yup! Tortoiseshell cats are mostly female and ginger cats are mostly male indeed ^^.

This is due to their sex chromosomes- typically a cat must have the gene on both X chromosomes to be torty (meaning that male cats are only that colour when genetic mutation occurs). With ginger cats it has to have the ginger gene on all X chromosomes (meaning its much easier for males and therefore more common).
