DO I drink too much or what?

I'm 74 years old and have been a fairly heavy drinker most of my life. Since retirement, I drink daily , usually a couple of gin and tonics in the morning and beer throughout the day (4-5). At night, I like to top it all off with some a couple of glasses of blended scotch. Aside from occasional indigestion, I feel okay though my doctor thinks I'm nuts to be drinking so much at my age. I quit smoking, eat health, and exercise with long walks (usually to the pub on the corner, it's about 4 miles there and back). What do you think?

I agree that you need not worry @ your age. Unless you have plans to live to be 100 keep up the happy lifestyle. He sure to take a multivitamin and increase your exercise even more. But at 74 you have had time to know life and what you expect from it. Enjoy your retirement for what its worth.

You asked what I think. I think that you, like most addicts, are looking for an excuse to continue your behavior.

I'm sure you "feel okay", but by the time you feel your liver fail or a blood vessel pop in your head, it will be too late.

Get the drinking under control now. Getting down to three drinks a day would be a good start, but two a day would be better for your health.

Maybe you feel like 74 is old enough and you don't want to see 94. That's your call.

Finally, it sounds like you may be bored or depressed. Find something to do, and you won't have the time to drink so much. There are plenty of students and small businesses looking to gain the advantage of your knowledge.

Your 74 already- who cares? Not like you are going to die young from it, or you are going to go broke or lose your job or drive drunk. Personally, that much drinking would interfere with other things I like to do, but if thats not a problem for you, then its not a problem for you!

People act like living to 90 is something great to work towards. I haven't met too many people over 80 who are worried about dieing. Most of them them would just as soon have it over with.

Who cares... 74 isn't the age to start worrying about making changes in your drinking... If you've been doing it your whole life... stopping now isn't going to change much.

Statistically speaking, you are only going to live another 4 years anyway as 78 is the average life expectancy. Might as well enjoy it while you can.

    Bottoms up!

At your age you shouldn't drink. You're lucky at 74 you're still alive and drinking. Other people got liver failure and other complications because of drinking. Stop drinking, at your age you might develop complications like cirrhosis.

    and for your question,

    Yes
