Is there a way of determining is there is an extra RAM in the computer without opening the cover?
Before I came home for the holidays my brother said he plugged in an extra RAM to our parent's machine but it is very slow. It's my turn at home (holidays) and I want to find out if the extra RAM is working. How do I do that without opening the cover (old P4 machine). I can't remember what the original RAM was so looking at systems properties doesn't help.
Thank you - to anyone who can help me out.

I assume it is running some version of Windows. Right-click My Computer (usually on the desktop, but also appears in the start menu in most versions of Windows) and left-click Properties. On the main page there should be a place where it says "Installed memory" and it will say how much is working. It is possible memory has been installed and is not all working.
Slowness from lack of memory is evident by the hard drive light coming on strong when the slowdown is noticed, and by the screen slowly repainting when switching from one open program to another.
