What is the penalty for driving uninsured?
Hi, i really need to get driving but im only 18 at the moment so insurance is just a big nono for me.
The CHEAPEST i've found is £13000 as a second driver on a toyota yaris 1litre engine, so its just totally retarded. I do live in the most expensive area to be insured, yea north manchester. I need a car so i can get to and from work atm its taking me 2+ hours a day to get there and back.
Here is what i was thinking.
1: get my dad insured on the car, so it doesnt flag on the police cameras so i have less chance of being pulled
2: Dont use it all the time, just when i need to so i dont use it a lot.
3: If i do get pulled, just say i took it and my dad didn't know so he doesn't get in trouble.
I'm going to be a safe driver, not one of these boy racers who make insurance so much for people like me. If i did do this im going to take a lot of lessons so i feel comfortable and pass my test.
Just want to know the penalty for doing this... I know it will most probably be a fine and can be a prison sentence, but on all these police programmes u see nobody ever goes to prison they get shitty fines. like id rather pay a £100 fine rather than £13000 insurance.

1: Getting your dad insured will still result in you getting a fine, points and the car seized PLUS he will also get fine and points (minimum) for doing it for you. Possibly you will both get charged with fraud as well. Plus doing it "legitimately" is illegal as you MUST be the main driver if you are, everything else is classed as "Fronting".
2: ANPR cameras are everywhere so you can not dodge them by limited your driving.
3: You will be charged with TWOC, still get the points and fine if you say you took it without your dad knowing and maybe time inside.
You say your going to be a safe driver BUT you then are saying your willing to be driving around uninsured!
You will also find 6points for no insurance will mean you will not be able to get any insurance for at least 6years. Caught twice and you will get a long ban, third time it could be time inside.
Everyone else has to pay high premiums because of people doing things you are proposing to do and you wonder why it is so high.

Okay, the fine for you driving uninsured will be around £200, but the maximum could be anything up to £5000.You will also get 6-8 points on your licence, which as a new driver, means your licence will be revoked if you commit the offence within 2 years of passing your test. The courts can also impose a 28 day ban if they want. As other people have already said, your car can be seized and you will be paying £120-£150 for recovery and £12-£15 per day storage fees to get it back. You will also need to have insurance to get it back. If it's £13000 now, and you have a no insurance conviction to add to it, you can add at least another 25% on to the price.
If your father says he gave you permission to use the car, he gets charged with aiding and abetting the offence, so he gets the same penalty. If he says you took it without consent, you get locked up for theft. That can result in a heavy fine and also a prison sentence of up to two years. They can also put up to 11 points on your licence and ban you from driving.
If you have an accident while you are driving uninsured, you will have to pay out a fortune. You wont have the expertise of an insurer to fight your case for you. The average cost of a claim is over £4000 and if third party injuries are involved, and it goes to court, you can expect to pay £10000. Can you manage that?
Insurers are reluctant to take on young drivers as it is, as they make so many claims. If you get convictions like this, when you are a new driver, you are just giving the insurers the ammunition they need to refuse to insure you, and you will find it so hard to get anyone to take you on.
Once you have a theft conviction, you will find life so hard. Nobody will employ you. Nobody will insure you. You wont get bank accounts, credit, mortgages etc. It will be in your local papers so everyone you know will know what you have done. You say that you are going to be a safe driver, so why break the law? If you want to drive, drive legally. There are insurers who offer smartboxes, which monitor your driving habits and your premium reduces if you drive safely. Why not take that approach. The only way you will get the price down is to build up no claims discount, and you wont do that if you are uninsured.
I hope that no member of your family gets mowed down by an uninsured driver as you will be heartbroken and wont get a penny in compensation because the driver was uninsured, yet you are prepared to put other people at risk by driving uninsured just so you can save money. What a selfish attitude.
The police weren't born yesterday and you will be caught at some point. You are not the first one to try this.

OK. If you do this and get pulled the fine is going to be more than £100. In fact the chances of you having an accident are probably higher than just being pulled despite you saying you are going to be careful - its not a matter of being careful - you will be an inexperienced driver and your risks are higher no matter how careful you are.
If you have an accident - even a minor one - your dad will then have problems with any future insurance he wants to take out and bear in mind that Taking Without Consent is a criminal offence (its basically car theft) which will have to be declared on any job application you might make and will show up on your record. For a prospective employer a motoring offence is one thing, car theft is another. And whatever happens, accident or being pulled and paying the fine means that the insurance companies will not look at you for a long time no matter how many shekels you wave under their noses.
Having said that I think your quote is excessively high and you need to look around more - try phoning insurance brokers rather than using the net. Failing all this get a scooter and wait for a year or two.

I was lucky not to have my car impounded. My insurance expired the day before, due to me swapping cars, but I forgot which day I had arranged to do it on. I drove to work and back (9 mile round trip) and got stopped half a mile from home. I was certain I was right. Thankfully, the Police were going in my direction, and came to my house to check the paperwork. They saw the other car.... (An identical age, identical colour and specification car, just less rusty with less miles!!) They saw where I had made my mistake, and explained this at court. I was fined £350 and received 8 points. And that was due to an honest mistake. Do it wilfully, and you run the risk of never being able to afford to drive. A car is a luxury, not a right. Do it properly or not at all. It's not about getting caught. What would you do if a child ran out in front of you and you hit them? Would your explanation be alright? Sure, they would be hurt, but if you're legal, there's no problem.

6 points plus a fine. Yes, the fine will almost certainly be less than £13000, but once you have 6 points for uninsured driving, no insurance company will touch you unless you pay them huge sums of money.
Plus they will immediately confiscate your car, and you won't be able to get it back without paying the release fee, a storage fee, and showing valid insurance.
Option 1: it's known as "Fronting", and it's fraud. They're starting to get tough on this now, so it could put you in prison.
Option 3: That will get you arrested for TWOC.
Do a bit more shopping around - for example, Co-operative insurance has a young driver scheme where they put a tracker in your vehicle and adjust your insurance premium depending on how you drive, so if you really are going to be a safe driver, your premium should be lower.

if you drive without insurance the police WILL seize your car, impound it and you'll either have a fortnight to get it back (it costs £200 for every day they have it in the compound) or they'll sell it or scrap it. You could also face up to a £5,000 fine, lose your license and get 6-8 points. Not really worth it to be honest, even if insurance is a total nightmare. And when you are older and want to get insurance, if you have that you did drive without insurance on your record, it will cost a fortune then as well, and they will find out, you can't hide it from them by lying.

If I were you try to use a firm that offers Telematics, this is a box that sits in your car and charges you if you use it at peak times, such as after 11.00pm or before 5.00 am, there are a few out there but they are more geared up for rich kids with new cars.
The police are able to see in seconds who is insured on a car, so unless you look like an old man or your dad like a young man you will get caught! Good luck though as the rates are so high I can apreciate you wanting to wangle it!

thanks for the good laugh! I was really impressed with your id rather pay a fine than a years insurance ? I laughed so hard I near fell off the couch, your not going to have a car ace, that car will be sitting in the impound until you pay that insurance, or its GONE LOL and particularly impressive is your plan that instead of paying insurance you just steal the car is that it??? LOL so , hows that gonna go? after you get out or prison for car theft you will what be comfortable and pass the test, oh wait I get it , nope sorry. and if that car has a ounce of gas in it your gone, your not going to sit around doing nothing and " not use the car a lot": what do you think ? were stupid? im sorry, no offense but you got some twisted messed up **** happening. Here is an idea, instead of looking up those overprice internet insurance quote scams, that get you to give all your personal information, and are compiling mailing lists of people just like you to go sell later to someone, or anyone who wants to spam mail, or call any phone number trying to sell worthless crap, or junk mail tons of crap a year to your address. do this, call the local agents on the telephone out ot the yellow pages, the quotes will be far less, and much better for you. you need to rething your master plan, it has a lot of flaws that will get you in prison. like for car theft for starters

the car will be taken away on the spot. Your dad will get in trouble, either that or you get done for taking without concent. A hefty fine (fines are based on your income if taken to court) and impound fee's and charges. Also the possibility of a criminal record and your licence will be indorsed which will then put your insurance up even more when you do decide to get some. Happy driving!

The penalty for this is 6 points on your license... you get your car seized and have to pay £120 to get it released aswell as an extra £20 everyday its in there. and you can get a fine of up to £5000.
