Oops. My son forgot his court date today for a ticket for expired tags. Now what?

My son forgot his court date today, and missed it. Now he's scared he'll be arrested. What can he do to fix it?

The ticket was for expired tag. Yes he just forgot that too. Tmrw is Saturday. Will they be knocking on his door? Should he avoid driving his car?

Update:

Your kidding me RayHere. You actually think my 20 yr old forgetting his responsibilities is somehow my fault. No way.

Anyway, he got the tag that day. The system won't let him pay online. And no he wasn't scared to go to court. The lazy idiot comment might be right on however.

Now he is scared though. This is an opportunity in my eyes. He calls me freaking out when he realized he missed it. That makes him more receptive to my observations about the level of responsibility he is showing. So what should my advise be? Call the local police or call the police in the town it happened in? Or both?

Should I take him to work? Even if we tell the local police, he still might be pulled over by the state patrol. And no that is not babying him. That would be more like taking advantage of the situation to have him as a captive (in my car) audience.

Go to your local police station & explain to them that your son for his court date, they will have a record of it.

& NEVER EVER Ignore the police, they will find you & cut you up, its better to face it now then to wait for them to use force on you

There is now a warrant out for his arrest. They are not likely to actively come knocking on the door, but if he gets pulled over, or goes into DMV or anything like that, they will know and he will be arrested.

You should whack him upside the head and tell him to get his prorities right. How the F*CK does someone forget a court date?! Or that their tags are about to expire?!!?!? Sounds like he's just a lazy idiot!

In most jurisdictions if the person does not pay the fine or appear in court two things can happen. First, the court will issue a failure to appear warrant (FTA) and two, possible suspended his driver’s license. In my state, both do happen. He should go to the police station.

He should contact the office of The Clerk of the Court (contact details should be on the summons) and see if they require him to present himself.

He should avoid driving his car, if there is a bench warrant he could be stopped and arrested.

A bench warrant for his arrest will be issued

Have him call the courthouse and get a new court date.

    "Forgot"?

More liek, "Didn't want to go because he was scared".

He shouldn't be driving until this is all dealt with. In the mean time, go get the tags for the car, if you can.
