Can someone help me! I'm really confused about my University degree!?

I'm now going to be a sophomore in college..i'm doing B.A in International Relations. Just recently my 'ambitious' friends brought up the topic of Minor degrees and I basically have no idea about that! Is it really compulsory for me to do it? My friends are going to take physics courses along with the International Relation course and are forcing me to take them as well! I on the other hand have no interest AT ALL in physics i hated it in high school and i doubt that'll change in college. Also i don't think my college requires me to do a minors degree so the question is are my friends crazy or am I? I know it'll look good on their resume & possible increase their job options but if I don't want to have a minors degree is that okay? As it is I have 7 courses in International Relations this year and I honestly could not handle anymore! I'm so confused please help!

What the..? Physics with International Relations ?

What delusional mind thought that was an appropriate combination ?

For some degrees you don't need one, you can take any electives you like instead, for others its a degree-requirement.

However it does look better to an employer if you have a minor instead of a bunch of "random" electives. Today, when employers get 100's of applications, small things like this do matter. Any tiny thing that captures their interest matters.

If you DO take one make sure that it is appropriate for you major.

Appropriate minors for IR: Italian, Spanish, Politics, Economics, Asian Studies, European Studies, Journalism, Geography, Sociology, Public Policy, Development Studies.

The most useful and noticable are languages, its a practical and technical skill, the rest are just theory.

I don't know of any colleges that require you to take a minor. It's a common practice, but certainly not essential. Why in the world an International Relations major would take Physics I have no idea. I doubt it would help your resume. A bad grade in Physics would actually hurt your resume. Maybe if you wanted to understand a little bit about nuclear weapons...

Taking a foreign language as a minor might be helpful.

I went to a large public university that required students to declare a major. and usually a minor . They had the option of declaring a standard major or a comprehensive major. With a standard major, a minor was also required. If you had no minor, than you had to have at least 60 semester hours in your major field in order to have a comprehensive major. It was usually easier to have a major & minor rather than a comprehensive major. After graduation there was usually an advantage to having both a major and minor as well. I started out as a biology major with a political science minor. When I went back to grad school, I picked up enough extra political science courses to complete a second major in political science. It was the perfect combination for someone who wanted to work for the Environmental Protection Agency.

(I actually ended up working for another government agency though).

Honors Specialization is a rigorous software it is extra based and extremely expert in a particular container of learn case in point; (Astrophysics) there'll be much less flexibility and a typical direction series. The honors degree oftentimes demands a extra physically powerful tutorial customary than a typical degree the place you're able to be extra lenient. A specialization is merely your focusing on that one container yet do no longer require a extra physically powerful tutorial customary. A double important is merely a broadened understand in 2 disciplines of learn case in point you're able to do a double important in (Geography and Sociology) in short an honors degree is academically extra annoying and with an extra specialization it is extra based and extremely expert interior a particular container.

I'm not sure about your school in particular, but I have never heard of a University requiring a student to declare a minor. A minor is really just a topic you are interested in but don't want to go all-out on. Once again, as far as I know NO school mandates declaring a minor. I know UC's and Cal States in California do not. However, it won't hurt to check with the registration office at your school.

Good luck, don't take so many classes.
