Hard Sci-fi anime and manga?

Having recently reread PLANETES, I am looking for new titles in the genre of "Hard Sci-Fi".

Suggestions are welcome.

I would also welcome suggestion for general sci-fi with a focus on character, not on "cool fights", moe-crap, harems, and other modern trappings that are dragging down sales and general public interest.

(I don't actually expect to get too many responses, and anime and manga fans of this generation only seem interested in watching/reading things that have been made in the last 2 years and have very little knowledge of things outside that time frame)

    Hm, the only anime I can think of that is closest to hard sci-fi is 'Moonlight Mile'. It was made in about 2004. It focuses on both story and characters, it wasn't amazing but it was pretty good. Its similar to Planetes in someways, but of course Planetes was much better.

    Moonlight Mile

    After scaling Mt. Everest, mountain climbing partners Saruwatari Gorou and "Lostman" Jack F. Woodbridge see the ISA Space Station, and each vows to make the trek into outerspace. When Helium 3, a new energy source, is discovered on the moon, NASA forms a new project named "Nexus" to harness that energy for use on earth. This is the story of the two and the paths they take to see their dream become a reality in the quest to harness the next-generation energy source.

    I don't know if this is hard sci fi but Akira is an anime about trying to prevent World War 3 in Japan.
