Writers: Does your story have these things?

(Following on in Joss' question vein...)

In your story, have you created ....

- A religion

- A language

- A new system of magic/unique type of magic/New use for magic

- An entirely new race of beings

- New species of plants/animals/creatures (why?)

Out of your characters are there...

- Any close-knit, loving, fully supportive families?

- Any children under the age of 8?

- Any characters with a fanatical obsession/fixation? What is it?

- Any characters with (diagnosed) depression/social disorder/personality disorders?

- Characters who feel as though they belong (in gender) to the opposite sex?

- Characters (other than antagonists) who have an extremely different world view to you?

- Female characters that require saving (i.e. Archetypal damsel in distress)?

- Characters with extremely boring backgrounds that they cannot angst about?

- Any characters with more than one mind/spirit/soul/consciousness?

- Characters with extremely bad luck in love/relationships?

Do your main/semi-main characters have any of the following traits:

- Unnatural hair/eye/skin color (i.e. Pink/bright orange/purple/blue)

- Changing eye-color?

- Tendency to cry at the slightest thing?

- Homicidal/Violent impulses?

- Extreme cowardice?

- Being of a race/species other than human?

- A really low IQ

- Compulsive lying

- Gets jealous/envious of others really easily

- Haughtiness/Arrogance

- A predisposition towards laziness/complacency/indifference

xxChae (would have a ball if you typed out additional comments for any of the things above...pretty please? :) )

Update:

@ Dumbledore's Army: haha yeah~ I did have the whole mary-sue thing on my mind when I typed the question - so a lot of things ended up on that vein - but as you can see, I also threw in random traits that I'm just personally interested in seeing (e.g. Low IQ/Compulsive lying/Obsession/Cowardice. Come on! Give us cowardly characters!)

Religion- Check. It's about learning to understand God, while sharing information with God (in this religion God is mostly inactive, and would not be prayed to for assistance). The entire goal of the religion is to fully understand the intentions of God, and carry them out. Many sects are still squabbling about whether they have the answers yet or not.

Language- Half-check. It's an ongoing project, and won't play much of a role in the completed work. It's not yet big enough to have a whole conversation in. However, it has plenty of interesting stuff, some of which isn't found in any language I've heard of. I'm sure any serious linguist would call it stupid, though.

Magic- nope. I don't use magic in my stories.

Races- Yes, three. Two are more heavily developed, though. They are alien in nature, and the language I mentioned belongs to one of them.

Species- Aside from the sentient ones above, I've been too lazy to create flora and fauna so far. They'd be nice, but overall irrelevant to the story.

    - Any close-knit, loving, fully supportive families? No

    - Any children under the age of 8? No

    - Any characters with a fanatical obsession/fixation? What is it? No

    - Any characters with (diagnosed) depression/social disorder/personality disorders? Semi (almost everyone's a few screws lose from their circumstances, but probably not medically).

    - Characters who feel as though they belong (in gender) to the opposite sex? No

    - Characters (other than antagonists) who have an extremely different world view to you? Yes (My characters aren't me, and none of them share an overall worldview with me. Two of them view things drastically differently, in regards to human nature, religion, and political views. I won't bore you with details here).

    - Female characters that require saving (i.e. Archetypal damsel in distress)? Once, but I'm convinced it was justified. Being held captive was a horrible experience of the character from the beginning of the story, and alters the way she behaves the whole time. She is (literally) strong enough to take care of herself and these were pretty unusual circumstances. Her capture was also relevant to the overall story as well as character-wise.

On a related gender note, one of my races is female-dominated (only as much as we are male-dominated) which is portrayed neutrally. I tried to make gender largely irrelevant to the story.

    - Characters with extremely boring backgrounds that they cannot angst about? Yep. I won't bore you with the details.

    - Any characters with more than one mind/spirit/soul/consciousness? No

    - Characters with extremely bad luck in love/relationships? A bit. One character no longer actively looks for love, but it's not quite due to bad luck and doesn't come into the story much.

Do your main/semi-main characters have any of the following traits:

    - Unnatural hair/eye/skin color (i.e. Pink/bright orange/purple/blue) They're not Sues.

    - Changing eye-color? They're not Sues.

    - Tendency to cry at the slightest thing? They're not Sues.

    - Homicidal/Violent impulses? Not except one character towards one particular person

    - Extreme cowardice? No

    - Being of a race/species other than human? Yes, I mentioned nonhumans above.

    - A really low IQ No

    - Compulsive lying No

    - Gets jealous/envious of others really easily No

    - Haughtiness/Arrogance No

    - A predisposition towards laziness/complacency/indifference No

    Second half proudly copy/pasted!

In your story, have you created ....

    - A religion--Nope.

    - A language--created one? Nope, unless you count a hidden code in music.

    - A new system of magic/unique type of magic/New use for magic--Heck no.

    - An entirely new race of beings--Nope.

    - New species of plants/animals/creatures (why?)--Nope.

Out of your characters are there...

    - Any close-knit, loving, fully supportive families?--No, but there is one incredibly caring foster mother.

    - Any children under the age of 8? No.

    - Any characters with a fanatical obsession/fixation? What is it? Not necessarily, but my character constantly plays piano. It's not known if he loves it or not, he just does it. He's almost kind of psychopathic, if you know what I mean...

    - Any characters with (diagnosed) depression/social disorder/personality disorders? My character has split-personality disorder. He has two minds, he is two people. One side is depressed, has horrible memory, kind of normal but hardly talks or shows feelings, the other is a serial killer...10 year old.

    - Characters who feel as though they belong (in gender) to the opposite sex? No.

    - Characters (other than antagonists) who have an extremely different world view to you? Mmm...I'd say yes, he does. He doesn't know how big the world is; he's never left his town, hardly ever left his own home. Except at night, when his other self goes out to kill people, but his "Normal" self doesn't remember any of it.

    - Female characters that require saving (i.e. Archetypal damsel in distress)? Nope, but there is a girl he decides not to kill.

    - Characters with extremely boring backgrounds that they cannot angst about? Hard to say. He doesn't remember anything. If he remembered, I'm sure he'd commit suicide or something.

    - Any characters with more than one mind/spirit/soul/consciousness? Yep! But nothing spiritual or magical.

    - Characters with extremely bad luck in love/relationships? Don't know.

Do your main/semi-main characters have any of the following traits:

    - Unnatural hair/eye/skin color (i.e. Pink/bright orange/purple/blue) No.

    - Changing eye-color? No.

    - Tendency to cry at the slightest thing? Well, he gets angry at the slightest things, and overwhelmed.

    - Homicidal/Violent impulses? Absolutely.

    - Extreme cowardice? Meh, not really. He hasn't experienced the world, hasn't been taught, so he doesn't know danger. But he's not one of those boastful "I'm not afraid of anything" characters. My story just doesn't focus around that.

    - Being of a race/species other than human? No.

    - A really low IQ--Unfortunately, yes.

    - Compulsive lying--Not really, he hardly ever talks.

    - Gets jealous/envious of others really easily--No.

    - Haughtiness/Arrogance--No.

    - A predisposition towards laziness/complacency/indifference-No.

    Have a nice day!

As a warning, my novel I'm writing is a fantasy and none of the creatures are human. They're all something else. So in their world, it makes sense.

In your story, have you created ....

    - A religion

    No

    - A language

Yes, different creatures have different languages.

    - A new system of magic/unique type of magic/New use for magic

Um... no, not so much. Not that I can think of.

    - An entirely new race of beings

Unless you count hybrids of something a new race, then, no, not really.

    - New species of plants/animals/creatures (why?)

Food/plants I do. Because it's a fantasy world where I created everything. Having similar food works, but inventing your own food/plants is awesome. :D

Out of your characters are there...

    - Any close-knit, loving, fully supportive families?

Some, yes. Partly because they are family.

    - Any children under the age of 8?

No. Well, one minor that's in there one chapter, but that's it.

    - Any characters with a fanatical obsession/fixation? What is it?

    No.

    - Any characters with (diagnosed) depression/social disorder/personality disorders?

Yes. The villain is pyschotic. :P

    - Characters who feel as though they belong (in gender) to the opposite sex?

    Huh? I don't think so...

    - Characters (other than antagonists) who have an extremely different world view to you?

Not extremely, but yeah, sorta, I guess.

    - Female characters that require saving (i.e. Archetypal damsel in distress)?

No. Not the damsel. I mean, they do require saving but it's not damsel in distress all the time. They fight, they kick butt, but sometimes they're in trouble. Same with the guys.

    - Characters with extremely boring backgrounds that they cannot angst about?

No. If they're boring, they're boring. If not, they aren't.

    - Any characters with more than one mind/spirit/soul/consciousness?

    No.

    - Characters with extremely bad luck in love/relationships?

    No.

Do your main/semi-main characters have any of the following traits:

    - Unnatural hair/eye/skin color (i.e. Pink/bright orange/purple/blue)

That would be natural hair/eye/skin color, so no.

    - Changing eye-color?

    No

    - Tendency to cry at the slightest thing?

No. I mean, the MC sometimes cries, which I'm changing, but it's for valid reasons.

    - Homicidal/Violent impulses?

    No.

    - Extreme cowardice?

I guess you could say yes. But in their defense, they are like that for a reason. it's not good to be brave because being brave means being stupid, getting caught, being tortured, watching your family/friends die, and dying yourself. So, yeah, being a coward is a good thing there.

    - Being of a race/species other than human?

Well, there are NO humans here, so yeah, they all are.

    - A really low IQ

    No

    - Compulsive lying

    No, not compulsive.

    - Gets jealous/envious of others really easily

    No

    - Haughtiness/Arrogance

    The villian yeah.

    - A predisposition towards laziness/complacency/indifference

    Not that I'm aware of...

In your story, have you created ....

    No.

Out of your characters are there...

    - Any children under the age of 8? - There probably will be, but I haven't developed any such character yet.

    - Any characters with a fanatical obsession/fixation? What is it? - I have one antagonist who is hellbent on turning the entire human race into vampires, so that they'll eventually have nothing to feed on.

    - Characters (other than antagonists) who have an extremely different world view to you?

    - Characters with extremely boring backgrounds that they cannot angst about?

    - Characters with extremely bad luck in love/relationships?

Do your main/semi-main characters have any of the following traits:

    - Homicidal/Violent impulses?

    - Being of a race/species other than human?

    - Compulsive lying

    - Haughtiness/Arrogance

This is what I have so far. I should be able to tick off a few more of these as soon as I've developed more of my characters.
