My smoke alarm keeps beeping on its own!?

I have no idea what model it is or how it works, except that when you take the lid off there's a long thin piece of metal that, when pushed onto a metal box, triggers the full alarm -- it beeps in sets of 3 and they last for as long as the metal stick is touching the box.

I've also noticed some text on the lid that says "push centre to test and silence alarm", which I can obviously work out pushes that rod into place.

The annoying beep is one beep every 20 seconds. Desperate to silence it cos it woke me up at 2 am, I push the rod onto the box and let the real alarm blare for one 'set'. Still beeps after 20 seconds. Try it for two sets and it goes away and it starts again! I try it for three and it went away... Until 2 days later. Now as I'm typing this, I'm listening to it beep my mind out and I can't do the blare thing cos I got parents sleeping.

I would find the instructions but this house has been rented to many before me and it is lost. Cannot replace battery cos the label inside says I can't (damn right I can't). Help! How can I deal with this without smashing it with a hammer? Thanks!

Mine does the annoying beeping sound and also says the battery cannot be changed too. I want to call someone to fix it because I don't want to leave it and have a fire without knowing. But, it's late right now and I'm sure no one's going to come to my house to fix it. I cannot slip the cover off. Maybe you should try calling someone to fix it. Buying a battery wouldn't do anything. The fire alarm you have now is probably the temporary ones which you get when you first move in. I got that one. :/ Not ideal if you're too lazy to fix it.

Must likely the back up 9 DCV battery is dead. Replace the battery with a fresh one. NOTE: AC and DC smoke alarms both have batteries. The AC electric type has battery for back up on case of power failure. It's recommended to replace batteries on every one of them at least once a year. The Fire Departments had an idea long time ago that came as a good suggestion that works for most people...Change those batteries on your birthday date. Good luck...!

The beeping is to warn you that the battery needs replacing. Buy a 9 volt battery, the small square one and use it to replace the existing battery in your alarm, asap.

It is ridiculous for you to say the smoke alarm doesn't allow changing the battery. The battery is SUPPOSED to be changed EVERY year. When a smoke alarm beeps that means the battery is running low on power. The beep is to tell you to change the battery. So, quit whining, and change it.

I gave Scott B a thumbs up because he is right. As an added thought why don't you call your landlord? He is the "Pro" regarding his property. Let him tell you or better yet fix it. It is his insurance that will go through the roof if there is a fire. He will jump like a trained dog over this matter.

more than likely you have more than one alarm inyour house that are all wired together so that if one goes off they all go off. usually what happens is one of them either goes off or goes bad than they will all beep until you find the one that originally went off and push the button that says test/silence. easiest way to figure it out is to push the button on all of your alarms if you have done this and it is still beeping than the unit itself is bad and must be replaced. I bought four Kiddie alarms brand new and had to replace one of them right out of the box, so they do go bad.

Take the cover off the alarm. And replace the batteries.

If it's a 'hardwired' unit meaning it runs on 110volts and has a battery back-up, the power may be off and it could be beeping to tell you that it is running on battery only.......check the breakers or fuses in your panel. if it's just a battery powered unit, the battery is low......if it's a non-replaceable battery, you need to but a new detectore, but get one that has a battery you can replace. in some states and provinces it is law that there is 110v powered units installed......if that's the case where you live, the landlord HAS to have them installed.....again, determine if this unit is 12v or 110v
