It is generally supposed that Union soldiers wore blue uniforms and Confederate soldiers wore gray ones. However, this was only a generalization. Both the Union and the Confederacy drew up uniform regulations, but as a matter of practical reality neither side was able to equip its men at the outbreak of the war. Indeed, neither side had an army to speak of other than a few thousand U. S. Army regulars. Instead, both sides relied on locally raised regiments.

At the start of the war there was a wide disparity in uniforms, soldiers wore whatever the depot sending them out had available. Confederate soldiers wore khaki or butternut brown - rarely gray.
