Why did Yahoo take away the comments sections below every article?

Probably the same reason they did away with the old comments forum a few years ago, it became saturated with trolls and racists flaming each other rather than people actually making comments about the story.

Odd, when Yahoo had endless bash Bush/hang Cheney/GOP=oil/moveon.org/Daily Kos updates, it was fine & dandy........for 8 years it went on,day after day.........some of the ugliest, meanest, rude, foul, racist, sexist, threatening comments went unfettered for the most part. NOW, it needs to shut it down, or revamp it , or make it easier to make you use your real name..........

Yahoo will likely link comments to a new service like facebook only.

Yahoo knows the public, the consumer is not on the same page as Yahoo founders all the time...and they don't want to allow 'free speech' right now. Just give you the news on the professional protesters at Wall Street, backed by labor unions, backed then by the DNC, backed then by the White House....all in sequence.

Yahoo - no comment.

I'm all for a word limit, or an e-mail comment usage limit, so many posts in a day or hour, etc. But, why eliminate it altogether? Who w

ill comment on how bad Indy Colts are, or how good Green Bay is?

The reason that Yahoo removed the comments section from its articles, starting Oct 6, 2011, can be attributed to any on / all of the reasons below:

1) Yahoo's newly forged alliance with ABC.

2) Yahoo's desire to have people post comments with their real name/informations.

3) Yahoo's desire to move comments offsite to more mainstream social media sources, such as Twitter and Facebook.

4) Yahoo is tired of having its article authors rediculed for poorly written and/or slanted articles.

5) Yahoo does not want to host a forum for desenting views opposing the stand of itself, its owners/investors or the government.

Pick any of the items above as an answer. I'm sure that all of them had at least a little weight in their decision to deep-6 the comments.

As for me, I'm on the hunt for a news source that actually encourages the transfer of comments and ideas between readers. Yes, there are many opposing views, and some can be downright nasty, but if you filter those out, some people have some good ideas. And who knows, maybe you can learn something from one of them.

the market for yahoo comment surveys has somewhat dried up. there is still a comment section for such stories as political issues, such as an empty seat on the supreme court. yahoo comment section has always been an income for yahoo. it has also been a way of monitoring American opinions and anger. the comment section has been left for stories that still have buyers. it is just you cannot reply to a reply. mostly the survey market dried up, and so did the opportunity to make a comment. yahoo broke the comment section when they allowed more than one account per person. that is why the survey selling dried up, it was "inaccurate" data, poisoned by multi account holders.

Calm down.

It's not the liberals. It's not the Jews. It's not Obama. It's the server. It happens regularly. The comments will be back. Yahoo LOVES the open comments section - as an advertising rate marker. You get that, right? Yahoo doesn't give a damn about the content, they just want countable proof that people are looking at their pages, so they can sell ads. The rudimentary, AUTOMATED language censor and thumbs up/thumbs down/comment hidden algorithm have no politics. They're simple machine programs.

But keep up the crazy, folks. It's a hoot to read!

See the stupid comments here about the President. Multiply that by 10 and add some birther - John Birch - tin foil hats - and racism. Essentially yahoo saw a service they provided being taken advantage of by paid for hacks and unemployed racists. Yahoo makes its money selling ads. If people click on a news story and see all the crazies leaving insane comments they simply move on to another site. Yahoo loses revenue when people don't hang out on their site "the longer you are there the more likely you are to sign up for services or click ads."

It's too bad, but yahoo could do things to prevent such abuse in the future. For instance it is a known fact some people commenting were literally being paid to spam. These people used multiple accounts to thumb up their comments and blanket the comment sections. Yahoo could implement an isp block to help prevent this.

Because the readers have caught on to the bias and slanting of yahoo articles and have been commenting on them. Sure there are trolls, etc. but it just shows how the media can control what you read whether it is all the truth, quotes taken out of context, or just bias toward candidates that THEY pick for you to vote for.

The shutting down of Comments was related to Jewish organizations threatening Yahoo with lawsuits.

Its annoying. The old comments forum was better. Despite the trolls, there was freedom of speech. There is trolls on their current forum. You will never get rid of them. Learn to live with them.

It comes with your net neutrality crap. And teh government keeps it's finger on you. Nazi Germany coming your way
