To all my Jewish contacts, now that the sun's gone down?

except here on the west coast, what did you break your fast with? I my family, our traditions were for such horrible dishes, that the only reason I could eat them was because I'd fasting all day. Sturgeon with beet and horseraddish as a condiment, geffilte fish, the Philly scrapple of seafood. For the longest time I thought meal was still part of the atonement.

BQ As most of you know, I don't really practice Judaism, but just go to family and to five a certain nod of respect to the religion I was raised. But the one thing that did move me was hearing the Shofar. It would make my arm hair stand up. How does the shofar effect you?

Anyway, I hope your day of atonement was one of fruitful contemplations about what marks you missed during the last year, and meaningful meditations on how you can try to do better in future.

Update:

((((((Avrah)))))) ((((((Angels))))) Sorry you feeling poorly, please get well soon. I'm sending some subatomic behavior particles through the internet. They're called healthons. Like chicken soup, they may not help, but they couldn't hurt.

Update 3:

Sorry, I typoed! ((((((Aravah)))))

Update 4:

SheyneinNH, can I take that as an invitation to your seder in a few months?

I did learn how to make my grandma's matzoh balls from scratch, and bring a big batch.

I'll just wait outside for the first few rituals, like Kaddhish, Karpas and Urhatz, and then, when you open the door and say, "let all who are hungry come and eat," I'll slip in with grandma's matzoh dumplings.

My shul has a break-the-fast dinner, where the congregation can share a meal together. This is a lovely tradition, as we all feel that we have just come through a difficult ordeal as a team.

    .

I broke my fast with a piece of the sweet lukshen kugel, then a bagel with cream cheese, tomato and lox. Then fresh fruit and a rugelah.

You probably don't like gefilte fish because you've never had real home-made gefilte fish, just the stuff from a jar. That would be like passing judgment on chicken soup after tasting only Campbell's from a can. You should taste the gefilte fish I make for Pesach!

Yom Kippur is always meaningful and stirring.

May everyone have a healthy, happy, peaceful and productive 5772!

ETA: Yes, you may take that as an invitation to the seder. But you had better come at the beginning; by the time we get to Ha Lachma Anya, the gefilte fish is gone!

Following my mother's (humane) custom, I serve the gefilte fish right after the Karpas, so nobody has to starve through the first half of the Haggadah,

At long last, our community spread at the end of Yom Kippur included things that weren't sweet - I just can't eat sweet stuff on an empty stomach. Raw carrots with hummus and some delicious little savoury biscuits were just perfect.

Yes, the shofar is always massively startling and moving. Sadly our good shofar-blower wasn't there at the end of Yom Kippur so the shofar blowing then was a bit useless and didn't provide the full shiver factor, but on Rosh Hashanah it was awesome.

And I do hope your healthons get through to Angels. She's had too much difficulty this past year and it seems impossible that all our goodwill can't make a difference..... Add my energy to them.

PS isn't it just typical of the idiot spell checker that it gives both words of Yom Kippur as mis-spellings, even though there is a section on this ludicrous site entitled Yom Kippur?

Bread,Coffee and Juice, I didn''t like the soups at the Shul, so when I got home I was very tired and I was having a headache so I took 2 panadol pm and went straight to sleep today I have bread with cheese and onions and bistec.

I start off with a piece of cake and a cup of coffee (after Havdalah). We sit down to mac and chz with lots of liquids (water, oj, snapple) about 20 min later.

at first i ate a cake

and after a while we had a meal-and i ate pasta with meat.

the last shofar blowing-on the closing prayer-was the most exciting.

i cant express how i felt at this moment,it cut my heart..idk..

    anyways,it was a gr8 ,exciting day.

answer: egg salad sandwich with chips and a salad. The shofar sends shivers down my spine.

Hope your coming year is filled with warmth, love, family, friends and health, my friend

  • Too ill to even give a nod towards fasting or make it in to services this year. Really gutted.

    Hugs to everyone.

i don't follow the rabbis calculated molad calendar designed to prevent 2 sabbath days in a row but instead follow the karaite / Aaronic priests lunar calendar which has no postponements in it so i just started to fast for atonement at sunset here.
