What does the word 'indie" mean?
I keep seeing references to indie films, indie music, etc.

Independent. Usually means the film, music or game doesn't have a label or someone backing them. They would be independently owned by the people themselves.

"Indie" stands for "independant",
Indie films are usually low budgeted and dont have a backing of a well known big company eg Warners Bro
Indie music are produced by artists that either run their own record company or aren't signed to one at all.

I've never been to the States but all my life ''The Indi'' or ''Indie'' has always been the nick name for the Indianapolis 500. Guess I'm showing my age.

Short for independent. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff,
a pop group not affiliated with a major record company.

In reference to motor racing and specifically the racing circuit in Indianapolis, then "Indiana."
In reference to artistic production free of control by large corporations, then "independent."
