After someone becomes a Christian, do they still need to "fear" God?
After someone becomes a Christian, do they still need to "fear" God?
If not, then what do you make of these verses?
1 Peter 2:17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Yes,fear as properly defined,is on-going in the life of a Christian..Daily sanctification, holiness and repentance in fact, are rooted in and motivated by a Healthy "Fear of the Lord"...
This fear of course,is not synonymous with terror or undue fright but should be understood as,an Awe,Respect, Reverence and Soberness toward our Creator, motivating and leading the believer to obedience..

The fear of God is not doing sin.
when you fear God, you stop doing sin and obey Him, it's a healthy fear which keeps us from doing sin. It's not a fear which promotes anxiety and pissing in your pants, but rather one of respect etc.
It's the kind of fear that knowing if your going to do adultery you will end up with HIV or any other std, it's exactly the same.
read more bible and ask preachers. it's not such a wonderful idea asking questions on sites like these because people tend to be quite mean.

It's a translation thing. The closest translation is fear, but it basically means to revere an individual--in this case, God.
To explain, when you were living with your parents (or are if you are that young still) and they told you to do something, you usually did it, right? If you had a play or a musical recital or something like that, you wanted to do well to make your parents proud of you, right? You feared them in the sense that you feared disappointing them, but you did not fear them in the sense that they were going to kill you for not doing well in the play or you didn't do this chore or whatever.
Same idea here. You fear God in the sense that you fear disappointing Him, that you want to do right by Him as you would want to do right by your parents.

Fear in the sense of fearing and trembling for HIS goodness and mercy, as in :
Jer 33:9 Fear and tremble for all the goodness and prosperity (positive fear)
and
Mark 5:33 Fear and tremble for knowing what have happened to her over her healing (positive fear)
It is certainly wrong to preach otherwise, we Christians are living in the new covenant of Grace, and not under the old covenant of Laws. It is wrong to teach God as an angry God, but should reveal God as Jesus, the Gracious Lord, full of love and mercy.
Shalom,

Yes, It's having respect for God. He is the Almighty he is the one that created the earth and everything in it. The Christian that don't fear God, won't follow his commandment and won't follow him. You got to have some sort of level of fear towards Him if you want to be his follower.

Yes, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. The book of Proverbs has several verses telling about the fear of the Lord and it is good. God sees all things. To ignore him and act like he's not there is a big mistake, a dangerous mistake. The Lord is close to all those who love him with all their hearts.
There are many good verses about the fear of the Lord here:

Believers are not to be scared of God. We have no reason to be scared of Him. We have His promise that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39). We have His promise that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great impact on the way we live our lives. The fear of God is respecting Him, obeying Him, submitting to His discipline, and worshipping Him in awe.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
Yes, ...I believe too many of us have lost that fear, and have become complacent in our relationship with the Lord. Trying to live our Christian lives apart from the fear of God, we will never realize all the joy, purpose, power, vision, beauty, goodness, righteousness, hope, and peace that God intends for us.
