Is it ok to baptize babies?

Jesus made the statement at Matthew 28:19,20 to make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded them. (Those who are baptized must be disciples of Jesus. That is they are individuals who have learned about Jesus and have chosen to follow him, a choice that no infant is able to make.) So what do you think why are babies baptized? Why is it taught that babies will go to hell if they aren't baptized? Only serious answers please.

Update:

TruthRev- I have to disagree with you. The scriptures do mention Lydia's household but says nothing about an infant being in her household. It also mentions the households of Cornelius, the Philippian jailer, Crispus, and Stephanas. (Ac 10:48; 11:14; 16:15, 32-34; 18:8; 1Co 1:16) But no where does it imply that small babies in those families were also baptized. It states that in the case of Cornelius, those who were baptized were those who had heard the word and received the holy spirit, and they spoke in tongues and glorified God; these things could not apply to infants. (Ac 10:44-46) Lydia was “a worshiper of God, . . . and Jehovah opened her heart wide to pay attention to the things being spoken by Paul.” (Ac 16:14) The Philippian jailer had to “believe on the Lord Jesus,” and this implies that the others in his family also had to believe in order to be baptized. (Ac 16:31-34) “Crispus the presiding officer of the synagogue became a believer in the Lord, and so did all his househol

Update 2:

MaxMarie- Circumcision and Baptism are two different things. Why are you comparing the two?

You are correct. There is no biblical reason to baptize a baby. I think people do it to give them false sense of security. Baptism should only be done once a person accepts Christ as a public display of their new faith, something a baby could never do.

Baptism is for everyone, infants and adults. A few non-denominationals, Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Penecostals, Seventh-Day Adventists, and LDS (Mormons) all denominations of the last 200 years reject infant baptism. All other Christians both Protestant and Catholic baptize their entire family including their infants. It's the way its always been done and it's scriptural. Scripture states that baptism is the new circumcision. At 8 day old infants were circumcised, we baptize our infants marking them with the Holy Spirit. (Genesis 17, Colossians 2:9-12). The Jews of the time, with the male as the patriarch and head of the household, baptized their entire family (1 Corinthians 1:16). This was quite natural, because as stated above they were following God's commandment to give their families the Mark of the New Covenant, the way they have done circumcision for generations upon generations.

Irenaeus, (lived second century and died in 202AD) wrote "Christ came to save all who are reborn through Him to God — infants, children, and youths." Infants who are reborn, very interesting.

Augustine (lived 354AD to 430AD) wrote "Whoever says that even infants are vivified in Christ when they depart this life without the participation of His Sacrament (Baptism), both opposes the Apostolic preaching and condemns the whole Church which hastens to baptize infants, because it unhesitatingly believes that otherwise they can not possibly be vivified in Christ,"

Ambrose (lived 339AD to 397AD) speaking of the necessity of baptism, says:" No one is excepted, not the infant, not the one hindered by any necessity."

Joseph and Mary took Jesus to the temple to have him circumcised - that is dedicated to God as an infant. Luke Chapter 22

Then as an adult he chose himself.

For some Christian denominations it much the same these days. An infant is baptized, then at the age of consent they chose for themselves and are confirmed in their faith.

The NT speaks of baptisms of “households.” This would include infants.

Paul said, “I did baptize also the household of Stephanas..." [1 Cor 1:16]

Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him. [Acts 2:38-39]

He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, “Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved." [Acts 11:13-14]

When she and her household were baptized... [Acts 16:15]

Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. [Acts 16:30-33]

Crispus, the official of the synagogue, became a believer in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul became believers, and were baptized. [Acts 18:8]

It mentions make disciples of all nations yes. A person can't be baptized before becoming a disciple? Thousands were being baptized by John in the river and they hadn't even met Jesus yet.

Jesus mentioned that Baptism would be the new circumcision, and it would replace it. Typically, Jews were circumsized as babies. So I really don't see anything wrong with the baptism of children.

I've never heard of ' babies will go to hell if they aren't baptized'.

    Bible and Tradition:

Babies can be the recipient of grace. Baptism leaves an indelible mark on the soul and washes away original sin.

"For this reason, moreover, the Church received from the apostles the tradition of baptizing infants too." Origen, Homily on Romans, V:9 (A.D. 244).

Acts 16:15 - Paul baptized Lydia and her entire household. The word "household" comes from the Greek word "oikos" which is a household that includes infants and children.

Acts 16:15 - further, Paul baptizes the household based on Lydia's faith, not the faith of the members of the household. This demonstrates that parents can present their children for baptism based on the parents' faith, not the children's faith.

Acts 2:38 - Peter says to the multitude, "Repent and be baptized.." Protestants use this verse to prove one must be a believer (not an infant) to be baptized. But the Greek translation literally says, "If you repent, then each one who is a part of you and yours must each be baptized” (“Metanoesate kai bapistheto hekastos hymon.”) This, contrary to what Protestants argue, actually proves that babies are baptized based on their parents’ faith. This is confirmed in the next verse.

"And many, both men and women, who have been Christ's disciples from childhood, remain pure and at the age of sixty or seventy years..." Justin Martyr, First Apology, 15:6 (A.D. 110-165).

Further, in his Dialog with Trypho the Jew, Justin Martyr states that Baptism is the circumcision of the New Testament.

"And they shall baptise the little children first. And if they can answer for themselves, let them answer. But if they cannot, let their parents answer or someone from their family." Hippolytus of Rome, Apostolic Tradition, 21 (c. A.D. 215).

"[T]herefore children are also baptized." Origen, Homily on Luke, XIV (A.D. 233).

Source(s): Unbaptized babies still go to Heaven. Baptism is only the first step. Confirmation is when one makes a commitment to God.

Please Notice how the Bible describes the manner of Christ's baptism which is the perfect pattern for all of us: "And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan." Mark 1:9. Jesus told Nicodemus, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5. There is only one true baptism. It is both a baptism of water and of the Spirit. The water alone is not enough. There must also be a baptism of the Spirit. In other words, it isn't enough just to go through the outward action, but there must be an inner spiritual experience. That is the baptism of the Spirit. The baptism of water symbolizes cleansing from the guilt of sin. The baptism of the spirit symbolizes cleansing from the very power of sin.

"And straightway coming up out of the water, he (Jesus) saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him," Mark 1:10. Jesus, you see, was baptized of water and of the Spirit. As in obedience to the command of the Father He went down into the water, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. And that is what the Holy Spirit wants to do for every one of us as we open our hearts wide at the time of our baptism. So we see that water baptism is God's New Testament plan.

Another reason for a second baptism is if we have been baptized in some other way than the way that Jesus was baptized. He is our example. The Bible says that John baptized in that certain area, "because there was much water there." John 3:23. So evidently the baptism of Bible days required much water.

Jesus showed as example by being Baptized By MUCH (Immersion)water Baptizmo: to submerge/dip NOT by sprinkling, infant baptism is NOT supported by the Word of God, an infant has no idea of what the committment is or what it means and is NOT accountable.Mary & Joseph took young Jesus to the Temple for "dedication" Luke 2:22 there are pre reqiuistite to Baptism Acts 2:38 / Acts 19:4 / Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus instructed His desciples to teach all nations, and then baptize them., in Mark 16:16 "He that believeth and is BAPTIZED shall be saved, he that believeth not, shall be damned". It is our public declaration that we have surrendered our life to Christ-a public confession Matthew 10:32 "Whoseoever therefore shall confess me before men, him I will confess before my Father which is in Heaven." Baptism IS a requirement. Peace/Love God Bless You

Jesus says there will be two groups of people in the end times. One group He calls few, the other He calls many. “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name? … and done many wonders?’ ... And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ ” (Matthew 7:22, 23).

"The baptizing of children, more specifically infants, dates to apostolic times. It's Scriptural origin is considered by some to be inferred in Christ's command: 'Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God'." (Mark 10:14) God Bless you.

Babies dont go to hell. Hell is just mankinds common grave. So no babies dont die because there not baptized. If the parents are baptized and are serving Jehovah God, then there children will be saved. Babies aren't old enough to choose whether they want to follow Jesus. So it's up to the parents to do the right things so there children can be saved. So if a baby is baptized, it really dosnt mean anything unless they are old enough to know what baptism means. So it's no point really.

Baptism and Your Relationship With God:

    http://www.watchtower.org/e/bh/article_18.htm

What steps do you need to take to qualify for baptism?

    ~A baby/infant cannot do this.

How does a person make a dedication to God?

~An infant cannot decide do this either.

What is the special reason for getting baptized?

~A NB cannot do this one, either.

These questions are all answered in the link I provided.

    WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES

■Christian baptism involves complete immersion in water,

    not just sprinkling.—Matthew 3:16.

■Steps leading to baptism begin with taking in knowledge

and showing faith followed by repentance, conversion,

and the dedicating of oneself to God.—John 17:3; Acts 3:19; 18:8.

■To make a dedication to Jehovah, you must disown yourself,

even as people disowned themselves to follow Jesus.—Mark 8:34.

■Baptism symbolizes dying to one’s former way of life

and becoming alive to do God's will.--1Peter 4:2

Being physically baptized is just to show, "Look! I know Jesus and I'm going to live for Him. He's washed me clean!"

Jesus taught spiritual baptism. We do not have to be physically baptized to be saved. But it's a good statement to make.

I think people who baptize their babies are more like dedicating their children to God. We know babies cannot make spiritual choices.

Pride , never read the bible and are afraid. James 4:17 "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." It is a sign of personal faith in Jesus to others
