Because the Bible says Jesus committed no sin (1 Peter 2:22) and it states He was tempted just as we are yet WITHOUT SIN (Hebrews 4:14).

Read the dialog there. Jesus did not say what or who he was. He asked the man to think it through.

Jesus was a master Teacher. He knew that what He might say was not the important thing. The important thing to the humble Messiah was the faith the man might develop in his own heart.

The important thing now is what You think. If you don't think Jesus is good, he may not be able to do much for you. So, you'll be right. And if that's all you want from life, there, you've got it!

Okay, so I knew this would come up sooner or later.

The easiest way to harmonize Mark 10:17-18 and John10:11 is to understand that Jesus is not refusing to accept the title "Good," but rather is questioning the young ruler's motives ("Why are you calling me good?"). And if He is accepting the title "Good" as applicable to Himself - and indeed, elsewhere specifically applies it to Himself - and God alone is "good" in these terms, Jesus is implicitly declaring His own Deity.

  • Worth checking out the full events in that episode. Jesus then gave a list of the good deeds the man must do so that he could have eternal life, but missed out the most important command, to love God with all one's mind, soul, heart and strength. Then when the guy said (somewhat overestimating himself I think) yes he'd done all the listed things, Jesus said come follow me, and then you'll be perfect. That really is a claim that following him is equivalent to loving God. Of course as to why he didn't explicitly say "I am God" in this and many other events (but not all), there could be many reasons. For instance he seemed to mostly do deep theological discussions in Jerusalem where the intellectual thinkers hung out, also he was often in Galilee which was a "country hick" area, so maybe he didn't want to stir up a hornet's nest with local pharisees who would go ape when he did such things. He did make great claims mainly in the religious capital Jerusalem, but was only there for short festivals, so he could retreat back to Galilee and let the pharisees cool off. So maybe it was wisdom to avoid controversy most of the time.

You really shouldn't down-arrow this. This revelation to me actually came from the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is not God then He could not provide for our salvation. If you are trusting in him for salvation but just think he is a man, your mind is not thinking straight, and it would be dubious you actually are saved.

Mark 10:17 There came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" Jesus knew that the man addressed him as only a religious teacher. He reminds him that no mere man merits the title "good" for that term applies only to God. Jesus knew he merited the title; he was asking the man if he understood what he was saying.

    Context, Context, Context.

Or did you not notice that (1) Jesus said "Why do you call me good no one is good--except God alone.", and not "I am not good" (2) The man talking with Jesus didn't really know, couldn't know, who Jesus was?

Jesus showed that he was a separate being from God by saying: "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone." (Mark 10:18) So Jesus was saying that no one is as good as God is, not even Jesus himself. God is good in a way that separates him from Jesus.

He wasn't saying that he was a bad person or a sinner, but showing that God deserves all glory and that they are separate beings.

If you study the way Jesus taught, He often spoke enigmatically, forcing people to think. This was a challenge, to lead someone to the conclusion that he was God.

He never said he was not good, he just answered no one is good except God. he knew he was God. Now if he said, I am not good, only God is good that is different. He tricked them by saying why do you call me good(knowing they were blind to who he was) only God is good.

Now the real question to ask is Does God wish to be the only one good?, and he loves everyone as sinners by saying this comment??, or is it because you are all blind to him and he has being very angry at everyone for not being as good as him, and all can be as good as God, just only God is good.

Sinless yes. Being asked if one is good is not a sin. He was correct only God is good.
