Why was Jesus afraid to give dates for his second coming was he afraid he was going to fail miserably?
That would have been a concrete evidence that he was indeed someone true now we have nothing except lame events to look out for earthquakes,wars,famine,etc....stuff that has been occuring on earth since the begining of time.this is no prophecy jesus could have done way better than that.

Jesus wasn't afraid to give the exact Date of his return but rather he doesn't know when Almighty God will send him back to our World.Only GOD is all Knowing and Omniscient! Jesus Christ is NOT GOD but MESSIAH(means ANOINTED).he was ANOINTED by GOD to bring the GOSPEL ONLY to the Lost Sheep of Israel for their Salvation but Israelites rejected the Glad Tidings except for few.

Although these prophesies were spoken and written about in Jesus time (over 2000 years ago) Hearing about earthquakes, famines, pestilences, and disasters would not have been known worldwide. Could Jesus have understood that in our day that the media (television, internet, radio, etc.) would be the means to "hear" about earthquakes in one place after another. Could it be that Jesus is not speaking of a local situation, but global. Without the media 'We" would not know of the earthquake in Japan, nor tornadoes and hurricanes a few states away. Also 2 Tim 3:1 But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.
In Matthew 23: 36 & verse 42 “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. 42 Keep on the watch, therefore, because YOU do not know on what day YOUR Lord is coming.

Jesus Christ is not afraid of anything, he knows exactly how people are, if people knew Jesus Christ was coming on a particular day they would continue to live their life of sin everyday and then in hypocrisy turn to him on the exact day he said he would come.
Jesus Christ himself is bringing earthquakes and other disasters in America for example. This is because Americans are disobeying Jesus Christ commandments and because Obama went into Africa and the Middle East which he should not have, he interfered by taking out leaders and creating havoc which has allowed sharia law to have more foothold in Egypt and Libya.
Jesus Christ has given me dreams about this, making me know that he will bring more disasters on America if Americans do not repent and turn to him. God has warned me about an earthquake taking place in America where the epicenter of the earthquake will be in Maryland and Delaware and other states will feel the earthquake. God has also warned me about splits occurring in America, about an earthquake occurring in Arkansas and about the gulf coast getting a strong earthquake. God has warned me about other disasters as well.

It wasn't a matter of fear. He simply did not know. And was honest and humble enough to admit it.
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." -- Mark 13:32, New International Version
Some things the Father keeps in His own jurisdiction. (Acts 1:7)

Read Matthew 24, Jesus told his disciples he would return in their generation, and the sign would be the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. That happened in 70 AD (during their generation). Read the bible for what it says, not what someone wants it to say.

God knows the hearts of people, and He knows when every person who will commit to Him will make that commitment. It will happen after all that intend to choose Him do, and not before. The fact that we were not given the itinerary of His plans is twofold: He wants us to live everyday like it was the day He is arriving, not live like a bunch of spoiled, lawless heathens for most of our lives and then try to be good for a day or two, and also, because not knowing the date is another tenet of faith. You must trust in Him to do as He says He wil do, and this is another chance to do just that.

More likely there never was a Jesus or Yeshua or John the baptist. Yes he could have done way better than that, if he existed.

I think the Bible writers incorporate a brilliant way to keep this movement going indefinitely. Of course a god retuning was a very common promise, most gods did make this promise.

He is waiting for the time when no one will utter the word 'JESUS'. He does not come simply but waits for sufferings pricked to his real noble followers and come to an end to their sufferings.

The following article "Are we living in the last days" may be of inerest to you
http://www.watchtower.org/e/bh/article_09.htm
Jesus warned God would kill off the wicked - he drowned them in Noahs day we don't know how he'll kill them off today - but the MEEK would survive to inherit the EARTH. Jesus thus didn't give a date because he wants to see which people will have faith in his words.
